«The Snake Cave (Yılan qobası) is located inside the nummulitic limestone [link] rocks of the Scythian Cape (a.k.a. Cape Batareya or Cape Aç Qaya) right in the middle of the water divide of the inner range of the Crimean Mountains between the valleys of the two rivers: the Western Bulganak and the Alma [link] . The cave is 320 meters long and has three floors. Contrary the cave’s name, there ain’t no snakes in it, however, you’re sure to meet a bunch of cute and human-friendly greater horseshoe bats of the genus Rhinolophus ferrumequinum [link] . The cave has revealed numerous archeological finds. In VII—VI cc. B.C. it served as a shrine to the Tauric people of the Kizil-Koba culture [link] ; and later as a Tauro-Scythian pagan temple».

Probably the longest and best drawing I did in field journaling class. Done at the Rock garden at the Denver Botanic gardens, on a cold May afternoon. The flowers inhere that I can remember are Grape Hyacinth, Pasque flowers, buckwheat, Violets (the yellow ones) bachelor buttons, some kind of yellow sage and a magnolia tree.

Size: 12 x 9 inches
Media: pen and color pencil
Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes
