-When Yamato was kidnapped as a baby.
-His mother was killed in trying to protect him and her body was buried out in the woods by Orochimaru. Eventually when her body was found that was led on to the realization that Orochimaru was doing his DNA experiments. (It went on a year)
-His father wanted nothing to do with him once he was rescued. He let him stay at home and took care of him that way, but that was the extent of their relationship.
-The third hokage helped him out a lot growing up, which is why Yamato kept such a high performance record in the ANBU under the third hokage's rule.
