    tonight

cradling lonesome to my naked breast

he found me on the edge of midnight
   an uncharted land, waiting to be discovered.

mountains, plains and valleys
   an untamed river yet to be named,
laid forth before his questing spirit.

he was the solitary envoy,
   a master at discovery,
   occupying with permission the humid lush rainforest
and quenching the desert thirst.

determined, he left nothing in darkness
   uncovering every crook and crevice
and bathing them in light and heat.

Captain Thomas McBride stood on the forecastle of his ship, The Falcon. The moonless sky and the black water made the English town of Gloucester gleam in the darkness from his vantage point at sea. He inhaled deeply, slowly. He was no fool. For a pirate to sail into the heart of England was more than dangerous. The slightest wrong move could send him and his entire crew to the hangman’s noose before dawn.

PROLOGUE

The midday sun beamed down from a clear blue sky highlighting the green canopy of the tree tops with a golden glow, tropical birds could be heard chattering and calling as they sat within the branches. A low throaty warbling call silenced them briefly as the birds assessed whether the animal that had made the noise was a danger to them, before carrying on chattering and squabbling over fruit and nuts.

His eyes pressed against the rings of the binoculars as he spied on the enemies down below chatting and shivering.
