2011 As Seen Through Art

Mon Jan 9, 2012, 8:13 PM

When a major world event occurs, human beings naturally gravitate together, express feelings, and share memories. And while news websites have a responsibility to present stories as a matter of fact, deviantART has the unique ability to showcase emotions and humanity through art.

2011 was full of emotional events the world around, and our community responded at unprecedented levels. From natural disasters to historical celebrations, entertainment milestones to tearful goodbyes, our community spoke out like no other community can — artistically, creatively, and emotionally. In many ways, last year marked the final chapter of a few eras, opening the door to new beginnings for 2012. Let's take a look...

Even more events and fun contests are being held by: $chix0r, $hexentanz, $realitysquared, @rapidograph,@whoatherechief and more..

deviant's Appreciation Day 2007

The idea for deviant's Appreciation Day came originally from @Tachy-on, who started a forum thread back in April, raising a very valid point -without you, without your art, your community spirit, your journal postings, forum threads, opinions and news articles - deviantART would not be deviantART.
With over 4 million users, we are sure that many of you have forged international friendships and creative partnerships which will be lifelong. On site, we have hundreds of art collaborations as well as community groups which regularly interact in order to develop high quality art packs and deviations.
There are regular devmeets held across the globe including the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Holland, Spain, Thailand, Australia, Israel, Argentina, Peru and Venezuala. Some of you have even gone on to meet and marry your partners, and produce deviant offspring through interacting on deviantART. Community love, for sure.

So, to get back to @Tachy-on's original idea, we think you really do deserve a  deviant's Appreciation Day, and here you have it.  A day where everyone in this art community does something to show how much we appreciate everyone else for being here.
deviant's Appreciation Day officially kicks off at 10am PST, Friday 22nd June. You can find your own local time here.

Various contests and events will take place throughout the site, where you will have the opportunity to take part in art challenges, scavenger hunts and other associated madness. Make sure you drop by the Forums and dAmn, as you are sure to find plenty of action on there.
We've got prizes galore, including devwear, prints, subscriptions, software, vouchers for self publishing. We've got signed goodies from $spyed, $lolly and other deviantART Staff. Gallery Directors and MN@ are giving away prizes that are too good to miss! So watch out for various journal announcements from deviantART Staff and Volunteers throughout the day to let you know what's going on, and where.

We hope you have an amazing day!

deviantWEAR specials

In order to fully participate in Deviant's Appreciation Day, it's uber-important that you stop by the deviantWEAR Shop on the 22nd as we'll be launching four new products!  Two shirts.  Two hats.  Four times the fun.

And just in case new products aren't enticing enough and you're still pondering whether or not to make a [magical] deviantWEAR purchase, all orders placed on June 22nd between 12:00 AM and 11:59 PM (Pacific Daylight Time) will include a free five-pack of dA Buttons.
(Please note: the dA Buttons will not appear in your shopping cart during checkout.  However, all successfully placed orders on June 22nd PDT will be shipped with a free set of buttons.)

In conjunction with all the Deviant's Appreciation Day celebrations going on around the site, #Shop on dAmn will be home to deviantWEAR giveaways throughout the day.  Pop in for your chance to win some devious delights.

And finally, add £deviantWEAR to your deviantWATCH to stay up to date and informed about the latest deviantWEAR details and promotions.

RULES REVISION!
We have made some minor rules revisions so please take a look at the rules section and the official rules page!

The Cars

Scion emerged on the automotive scene as a division of Toyota in 2003 and immediately began grabbing attention as being something unique in the automotive world. They offered cars at extremely affordable prices but with a unique style to them and an unprecedented amount of customizable options direct form the factory. Over the last 4 years they have expanded on this and treat their vehicles like rolling works of art adding more and more ways for you to modify them without breaking your bank account.

In addition to their innovative approach to the automobile they have also embraced the artistic community with projects such as the Scion Installation and Scion Space. It is safe to say there is no other car manufacturer like them, and we are proud to bring you this amazing contest!

Skin a Scion

Well, this is the easy part for a bunch of artists eager to demonstrate their creative skills. Down below you will see that Scion has provided us with templates and stock photo resources of the 5 models to work from.

Now, the task at hand is to choose one of the vehicles and either by using the supplied images themselves, or using them as visual inspiration, give that specific vehicle one hell of a paint job, a new skin that reflects what you do as an artist... what you think would look massive on a car. You can set it in a scene of your choosing, whether it is an urban environment, downtown Tokyo, the moon or Atlantis. This is all about you, their car and your imagination.

There are no restrictions on what format or style you use in your submission as long as you can submit it to deviantART in a digital format via the deviantART submission process. The format and style of the submission can range from fully traditional to fully digital or anything in between as long as the subject matter is you splashing a new skin on one of the 5 models of Scion vehicles.

Please submit your entries here in our Skin a Scion contest category!
Submit! > Community Projects > Contests > 2007 > Skin a Scion

To browse the current submissions please go to:

The Prizes

This is a Winner Take All! contest; only one prize will be awarded.  So, make each entry count as there will be no runner up prizes!

US entrants are eligible to win the Scion model used in the winning submission (xB, NG xB, xD, xA or tC subject to availability of the model at time of contest closing; see full rules for more details) or the cash equivalent of the model used in the winning submission. Cash equivalent is based on the cost of the vehicle coming factory direct with no additional customization - approximately $15,000 US.

Non US entrants, while not eligible to win the car due to limitations in distribution, are eligible to win the cash equivalent of the model used in the winning submission. This amount will be approximately $15,000 US.

General Rules

Entrants must be aged 18 or older to qualify for the prize (or be able to produce parental or guardian approval) and able to provide proof of age via a fax of their Drivers License or ID card.

To be eligible to win the car, you must be a US resident. Non US residents will win the cash equivalent of the vehicle model used in the winning submission. If the winning entrant is a US resident, that individual will also have the option of choosing the cash equivalent of the vehicle model used in the winning submission instead of the vehicle.

If the winner chooses the vehicle, the vehicle model will be the base version.  It will come factory direct and contain no special modifications. All winners will be responsible for any applicable taxes irrespective of which prize they choose.

You may enter as many times as you like.

For official rules, please click here.

The Template

Provided here are several templates and stock photo resources of the 5 models to work from. Feel free to use some, one, all or none of these in your finished piece of work!

Judging

Full-time deviantART staff will select the top 100 or 5% of entries (whichever is greater) based on the following criteria; individual expression, creative approach and technical proficiency.  These select submissions will then be presented to an independent juror's panel for final review and selection of the winning submission.  The panel will select the top 5 submissions ranked in order of their preference.  The jurors panel is comprised of artists from a leading game and visual arts studio, Naughty Dog Studios, and Blur Studios.  In the event the winning submissions is found to be ineligible, the next ranked submission in order will be declared the winner.

The Deadline

5 PM PST August 7, 2007

Entries submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

Groups Beta - Launched

  • Connect with deviants that share your interests and passions.
  • Increase your status in the deviantART community.
  • Organize and administrate classes of members.
  • Updated Message Center with new "stacked" deviations to enhance Groups communication and declutter your deviantWATCH.
  • Exclusive Admin Area available only to group administrators.
  • Groups-enabled deviation submission system, allowing for proper artist credit and ease of use.
  • Freshly designed widget editor that allows for drag and drop customization of pages.
  • Collaborative blogging abilities and tools to plan deviantMEETS.

Creating the world's largest art community has its challenges. Each day we gain 10,000 new deviants and 100,000 new works of art. With so much to see and do, it's easy to get overwhelmed.

Think about it. Every day you enter the metropolis of deviantART. It's a booming city, with lots of hustle and bustle. The streets are lined with deviations all begging for your attention, with deviants standing by hoping that you'd stop and take the time to comment.

Some days you buzz around the city chatting, uploading; you're in high gear… but, on other days you want a quiet place, away from the bustle. A home where you can chill out with other deviants just like you; folks that love the same art, speak your language and are willing to share their deepest artistic secrets with you, in private. But, that place on deviantART did not exist... Until now!

Whether you want to start your own group, or simply join a group, Groups will surely enhance your deviantART experience. When you make a group, you get the perks that a manager of any organization would have: you establish the group's mission and lead its charge by recruiting an administrative class and setting member privileges. When you join a group, you build friendships and better your art with deviants that hold the same interests and passions as you.

We've made the process as simple as possible for you. Just click one of the buttons below to get started.

  • The ability to choose between three special layouts and customize applications.
More Info on Super Groups

~Nemonus: "Groups makes it easier than ever before to get deviations you know will interest you straight to your inbox, like searching simplified."

*FlamieKitten: "Running a group is a lot of fun. My members are so nice to interact with and, as a founder, I find that my days on dA are never dull… as I always have something to do, reply to, accept, deny, blog, and improve."

$electricnet: "Groups has raised my activity level on dA by a factor of over 9000!"

=Exillior: "Groups is simply revolutionary. DA has always been a solid community, but I've found community spirit growing even stronger with Groups. It's made it easier for us to connect, not just over art, but over a specific part of art that we have in common with others."

`DEVlANT: "It's great how the community has been allowed to influence the development of Groups and the way it has adapted to suit the needs of those who use it."

Before we launch you into the wild of Groups-wonderfulness, here are a few important mentions on how Groups work:

All deviants can be an administrator in up to three groups.
Premium Members can be an administrator in up to ten. Why?

Administrating a group is fun, but it requires commitment. The group relies heavily on the function of the administrators to approve deviations, post blogs, invite and vote on new members and keep the group from going into decay. The community told us that given the large responsibility of administrators in group life, administrators will appreciate having a three group limit, so they don't over commit themselves. For those admins who want to go balls-out and admin more than three groups, they have the option to admin up to ten groups if they have a Premium Membership.

Each group has two distinct social classes: Administrators and Members.

Like the whole of deviantART, each group was designed to have a social hierarchy with different layers of deviants with different privileges. Some deviants will be able to edit content, manage Admin-only forums, and review contributed deviations. Others will be able to hover outside the group, actively watching activity from their message centers.

Social classes:

  1. Administration
    1. Founder
    2. Co-Founder
    3. Moderators (Super Group only)
    4. Contributors
  2. Members

The Administration class is responsible for setting up the group, managing the group, reviewing submitted content, and setting member privileges. The Admins rule the roost, so to speak. Some of the additional Admin perks include accessing the Admin Area and receiving Groups activity within NEW admin Message Center folders.

The Members class consists of fans of the group and can contribute content, but can't manage members, moderate or access the Admin Area. Unlike the Admin class which has a restriction on its size (any one group can not have more than 99 admins), the Members class is unlimited; a group can have an unlimited number of deviants in its Members class.

The Watchers class, similar to that outside of Groups, can passively watch a group and will receive group activity in the Message Center. A group can have an unlimited amount of Watchers.

This past Monday marked the passing of one of the last true giants in the animation world. To say Joseph Barbera was a legend in his field is simply an understatement.
Joseph Barbera was born on March 24 of 1911 and began his career quite earnestly as a delivery boy for a local tailor in Manhattan and later on, during the time of the Great Depression he attempted to become a cartoonist for a now defunct local New York Magazine. Fortunately for the world of animation, he didn't end up getting this job and instead found employment with the Van Buren Studio in 1932 as a writer and animator till the studio closed down in 1936, after which he found work at MGM Studios. A short year later he moved from his local New York environment out to California to work on MGM's newly launched cartoon division where he met and worked with William Hanna where they began making history with "Puss Gets The Boot", otherwise known as the introduction of two of his most famous characters, Tom and Jerry, who they would continue to develop over the next 17 years.

His Accomplishments

In addition to his 17 year run on Tom and Jerry, Barbera, along with Hanna has put out some of the most long lasting influences in the world of animation, entertainment and pop culture, many of which are still being reborn anew to this day. In addition to those seminal characters the list also includes "The Flintstones", "The Jetsons", "Jonny Quest", "Scooby Doo",  "Yogi Bear", "Quick Draw McGraw", "The Banana Splits", "The Atom Ant Show", "Birdman and the Galaxy Trio", episodes of the "Fantastic 4", "Loopy de Loop", "Motormouse and Autocat", "The Harlem Globetrotters" animated series, "Sealab 2020", "Josie and the Pussycats", "The Smurfs", "Cartoon Alley", and the "Karate Guard" amongst many many others. His work spanned over 70 years and just a casual glance at that list will show you exactly the type of iconic power he and his partner were able to muster up, with many of these series being revived as live action movies over the past few years, and it is worth noting that none of them managed to capture the same vibrancy and endearingly human qualities of their animated sources of inspiration.
Of all his accomplishments one that stands out most after Tom and Jerry would be The Flintstones. The first successful animated show to be aired in prime time, it was directly influenced by The Honeymooners and made no attempt to hide that love of the Jackie Gleason hit. It ran from 1960 through 1966 with brief returns to the small screen in the early and late 70's. No other animated series was able to pull this off till "The Simpsons" in 1989, almost 30 years later. It should also be noted that "The Simpsons" also paid homage to the Tom and Jerry duo via its cartoon within a cartoon, "Itchy and Skratchy".

Influences

Barbera's work with Hanna has had a resounding impact on the world of animation. The Simpsons and its Honeymooners-esque setting is an obvious one. But there is much more than that. The crazy comic timing and antics of Tom and Jerry set the bar for almost everything to come after and stood out from such peers as Disney. In its early years it stood apart for the almost surreal violence portrayed in the cat and mouse chases, but this was countered by a sublime sense of comic timing and amazing visual gags. But it always seemed like it may go that one step too far and that's what kept you equally laughing and on the edge of your seat. That style and sense of humor has carried into the modern day, influencing shows on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network who run reinterpretations of many of the old Hanna-Barbera classics, the early days of Ren and Stimpy and pop culture on a whole. Think about how many catch phrases from Scooby Doo do you hear pop up in causal conversation or most probably have used yourself. The visual joke of people running past the same tree in the background over and over, or the parodies of old Hanna-Barbera shows that are seen on Cartoon Network nowadays, many of which were overseen by Barbera himself?

Not many people leave as big of a mark on the world of popular culture as this man has, so rather than mourn his passing, it seems to be more fitting idea to celebrate his influence. And in the spirit of that celebration we have opened a special category for him if you wish to submit anything in memoriam. When you submit simply go to Community Projects -> Events -> Tributes -> Artist tributes -> Joseph Barbera to submit your work. Let's all give this giant one last big Yabba Dabba Doo to mark his achievements.
Customize! The deviantART front page…your way!

Very soon we will be releasing the very cool customize feature for the home page of <a href="[link]"deviantART.com!

And what does this mean exactly? Well, right now when you go to the main page it is broken up into four different channels. One for the Newest deviations, one for the Popular deviations, a third for Prints and finally, a fourth for Daily Deviations.

Now this is pretty cool, but wouldn't it be a whole lot cooler if you could choose what you wanted in those 4 channels? Or if you are a subscriber…how would you feel about having a whopping TWENTY channels to set up?

Now, you may be wondering just what we mean by "set up" so I will explain. The customize feature that will be released shortly will allow you to choose exactly what you view in those channels. If, for example, instead of the newest deviations, you wish to view the newest deviations in Photography > Architecture > Interior the new customize button will allow you to do just that!

Want to replace the Popular channel with a specific type of art? Go for it!

But it gets even better! You can add custom channels based off keywords! Say you want to keep in the loop on the newest Blue 1280x1024 wallpapers? Or you want to have c channel devoted to your favorite deviant? Simply add their name in and their latest work will show up on the home page!

So, long story short, if it exists on deviantART,  is someone's user name, is a category of art or print, or is something that you can search for, you can make it into a custom channel! The default for non subscribers will be four channels and for subscribers and astonishing 20 customized channels!

Enjoy, and go give `dionyziz and $pachunka a big deviant thanks for all the hard work on this!
Beware the stare of Mary Shaw.
She had no children, only dolls.
And if you see her, do not scream.
Or she’ll rip your tongue out at the seam.

THE MOVIE

From the writer and director of the international phenomenon Saw comes an experience on the razor’s edge of fear, Dead Silence.

There is an old ghost story in the sleepy town of Ravens Fair about Mary Shaw, a ventriloquist who went mad.  Accused of the murder of a young boy, she was hunted down by vengeful townspeople who cut out her tongue and killed her.  They buried her along with her “children,” a hand-made collection of vaudeville dolls.

Since that time, Ravens Fair has been plagued by death.  The ghastly dolls from Mary Shaw’s collection have gone missing from the grave and reappeared over the decades.  In the dead of night—wherever they are glimpsed—families are found gruesomely murdered with their tongues torn out.

Far from the pall of their hometown, newlyweds Jamie (Ryan Kwanten) and Lisa Ashen thought they had established a fresh start.  But when his wife is grotesquely killed, Jamie reluctantly returns to Ravens Fair for the funeral, intent on unraveling the mystery of her death.

Once reunited with his ill father (Bob Gunton) and his father’s new young bride (Amber Valletta), Jamie must dig into the town’s bloody past to find out who killed his wife and why.  As he uncovers the legend of Mary Shaw, Jamie unlocks the story of her curse and the truth behind the song from his childhood: if you see her and scream, you will never speak again.

Reduces prices and shipping fees on all artist prints!

We know that our artists want to sell more of their work and also know that lower prices and lower shipping costs attract buyers. We've worked out a way to reduce print prices and shipping fees across the board, so that artists will have the best possible chance to sell their work.

In many cases, these pricing discounts are steep – up to 60% – so this isn't a like a simple sale! We mean Serious Business – these changes will help you compete with other sites that sell prints. Head to the Prints tab on your profile page and click one of your prints to see the new pricing changes. To view the new pricing list for all products click here.

We even made a sweet deal to slash all shipping fees, for the next 90 days! All prints products, with the exception of framed prints and wrapped canvas, will have a maximum shipping charge of $5 to the United States, and $10 anywhere else in the world that we ship to – no matter what quantity or assortment of prints products you order.

Simplified Artist Royalty

Just when you thought you had enough, it keeps on coming. Instead of splitting commissions with deviantART, all artists will now get 100% of the markup (margin between the selling price and the base price). Yes, 100%! No more sharing. Enjoy it!

It's time to use your journals, blogs, Tweetbooks and any other broadcasting methods you have to let your friends and family know that there has never been a better time to shop deviantART!
