Welcome

CSS can be difficult when you're unfamiliar to it. So that's why we're writing these articles! If you have any suggestions or would like to write a section in future CSS Did You Know? articles, please note #CSS-DYK. :)

Google Webfonts

 Hey Devious CSSkinners!

A great part of making an appealing web design, whether its a Website or a Journal article skin, is the Typography. Fonts play a big role in this. Many websites and journal skins had to resort to using common typefaces that were installed on all machines. With CSS3, several websites use the @font-face property to implement the font file in their web pages. As this feature is not available for Journal skins, there is another way to use fancy fonts that dA has allowed to integrate into Journal Skins (it's not yet available for use in Gallery CSS).

Google Fonts are open source fonts hosted on Google's services for everyone to view and use. They will work just about anywhere online: webpages, google documents and presentations. So instead of using the limited fancy fonts *cough*HelveticaNeue*cough* that may not work for everyone, why not try adding a Google webfont to make your Journal Skin or even website look appealing?

Note: Don't include too many different fonts because it'll take longer to load. For example, `Ravenswd has provided the complete list of Google Fonts right in this journal, but notice how long it takes to load.

So let's have a look at the Google Fonts page below and the important features it offers:

  1. There's a total of 626 different font families in Google Fonts at the moment, but this number changes as you filter them
  2. This is where you can search for a specific font family if you know what the font begins with or by the Name of the Creator of certain fonts
  3. You can narrow down the font families with all the different filter options:
    • Serif - Characters that have lines at the edges
    • Sans Serif - Characters that don't have the lines at the edges
    • Handwriting - Characters that look handwritten in print or cursive
    • Display - Monospaced characters where I think they each have the same width
  4. You can display all styles in the font family if any, for example, Normal, Italic and Bold
  5. There's many options in the Preview of Fonts
    • By Word, Sentence, Paragraph or Poster format. This makes it easier for you to decide if you want the font for your Headers or Paragraph text
    • You can change the preview text, even add your own specific text to help you decide
    • Change the size of the font
    • Order the fonts by Popularity, Alphabetical order, Newest, Trending fonts and by font families with the most number of styles to least
  6. You can then quickly Add the fonts you like to your Collection for later use
  7. This is the part where the fonts are all collected for you to bookmark, download, import to your website and the code to integrate into your CSS when you click on Use

Here you can see a collection of my favorite fonts from each Category (Serif, Sans Serif, Display, Handwriting) with all the different Styles (Normal, Bold, Italic), if any. But to integrate the font into our skin, what we want to do is skip until number 4 to include into your Journal Skins.

As you can see in the figure above, all you have to do is copy paste the CSS under whichever selector you want to use the font for. Here's a working example:

CSS

h1 {
font-family: 'Amaranth', sans-serif;
font-size: 20px;
font-weight: 400;
font-style: normal;
font-variant:normal;
}

HTML

<h1>The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.</h1>

OUTPUT

The slick brown rocks humps over the crazy log.

Now there's a few things to keep in mind when integrating a font into your CSS.

CSS Font Properties

font-family

font-family: 'Amaranth', sans-serif;

The font-family property should have a generic family as a fallback system. If the browser does not support the first font (or takes time to load that one), it shows the next font as plan b. This font should be something that all machines have pre-installed in their systems.

CSS:
font-family: 'Lobster', cursive;

Output:
This is some fancy text.

font-size

font-size: 16px; | font-size:12pt | font-size:1em; | font-size:100%;

Basically you can either fix the size of your font in pixels, points, em or percentage:
  • Pixels are fixed-size units used for screen media. One pixel is equal to one dot on the computer screen resolution so this allows for pixel perfect representation. The problem with the pixel unit is that it does not scale upward or downward to fit mobile devices.
  • Points are traditionally used in print media, such as documents that need to be printed on paper. One point is equal to 1/72 of an inch. Points are also fixed-size units and cannot be scaled.
  • The good thing about "em" is that it's a scalable unit that is popularly used in web document media due to their mobile-friendly nature. An em is calculated by the current font-size. Most browsers default font-size is 16px, so 1em is equal to 16px or 12pt, 2em would equal 24pt, .5em would equal 6pt, etc.
  • The percent unit is similar to the "em" unit. The current font-size is equal to 100%, so 16px = 100%. While using the percent unit, your text remains fully scalable for mobile devices if the user increases or decreases their default font-size percentage.

font-weight

font-weight: 400; | font-weight: normal;

This is basically the thickness of the letters and characters. The property values start from lighter, to normal, to bold, to bolder. Or you can define their value by numbers from 100 - 900.

100 = lighter

200

300

400 = normal

500

600

700 = bold

800

900 = bolder

You have to make sure if the font family you're using even has the different weight styles. Look at the at the end to find these easily.

font-style

This specifies the font style for text such as normal or italic and inherit can be included in here so that the font uses the style from the parent element.

font-style: normal;
font-style: italic;

font-variant

This is used if you want your text to be displayed in a small-caps font or not

font-variant:normal;
font-variant:small-caps;

font

font: font-style font-variant font-weight font-size/line-height font-family;

Sets all the font properties in one declaration with that order but it may get confusing so it's probably better to declare them separately.

CSS:
font: italic small-caps 400 32px 'Exo';

OUTPUT:
This text has ALL the properties! :iconallthethingsplz:

Anyway, think that's about it! Here's a cool link =dhik-a showed me to help you narrow down the Google font families that have ALL styles:

So what are some of your favorite Google webfonts? :la:

:iconlablayers:

Advanced Typography

If you want even more options to customize your fonts, you're in luck! In this section, I will demonstrate some of the many properties you may use to customize your fonts:

The Basics

Let's start off by changing the text color. It's as simple as picking a color!
Code: h1 { color: red; }
Example: IMPORTANT: The contest will end tomorrow!

Next, we'll change the background with. This is great for highlighting content.
Code: h1 { background:yellow; }
Example: Limit 1 (one) entry per person.

Now, if you want to use a dark background, it is probably a good idea to have lighter color text (and vice versa.)
Code: h1 { background:black; color:white; }
Example: The skunk stole the squirrel's acorn from the den.

Text Decoration

The text-decoration property allows you to put lines above, below, and through your text.

The overline is great for people who like gravity backwards! ;)
Code: h1 { text-decoration: overline; }
Example: I want to buy a one-way ticket and fly to Pluto in a starship.

The strikethrough effect can be achieved by using the <s> tag.
Code: h1 { text-decoration: line-through; }
Example: Commission slot 7: OPEN!

The underline effect can be achieved by using the <u> tag.
Code: h1 { text-decoration: underline; }
Example: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

You can also combine multiple text decorations to form a cool handwriting-grid effect.
Code: h1 { text-decoration: overline line-through underline; }
Example: You think I'm paranoid but I'm just complicated.

(not recommended) If you're feeling nostalgic, there's also the obsolete <blink> effect that works only in older browsers!
Code: h1 { text-decoration: blink; }
Example: I am an eye blinking at you.

Text Transformation

Sometimes, you even may want to edit text capitalization in bulk or force all uppercase letters to show up for emphasis. That's where text-transform comes in.

Capitalize capitalizes the first letter in each word.
Code: h1 { text-transform: capitalize; }
Example: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

Uppercase forces every single letter to appear in their uppercase form.
Code: h1 { text-transform: uppercase; }
Example: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

Lowercase forces every single letter to appear in their lowercase form.
Code: h1 { text-transform: lowercase; }
Example: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

(not recommended) Full-width forces every single letter to appear in their full width form. It is currently rolling out in  major browsers and is not yet fully available for everyone. Some Windows XP users may see boxes instead of text.
Code: h1 { text-transform: full-width; }
Example: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

Letter Spacing and Line Height

These two CSS properties will allow you to manipulate space between letters and space.

If you want to space out individual letters, letter-spacing will do the trick!
Code: { letter-spacing: 2px; }
Example: I live in a mansion. Lots of room to run around here!

Additionally, you may use the negative-spacing attribute to squeeze in individual letters.
Code: h1 { letter-spacing: -2px; }
Example: I am a pack rat. I like to squeeze myself inside any small box I can find!

You can use line-height to space out individual line. Refrain from using a line height smaller than your font-size. Below is an example of line-height being used to achieve double spacing.
Code: h1 { line-height: 2em; }

Example: Cotton candy caramels cupcake marzipan I love bear claw powder chupa chups tiramisu. Cheesecake brownie cupcake chocolate lemon drops I love oat cake chocolate bar donut. Chocolate candy sugar plum gummi bears. Lollipop cheesecake faworki muffin ice cream powder. Toffee halvah apple pie fruitcake caramels fruitcake I love lemon drops. Macaroon fruitcake halvah pudding. Oat cake biscuit pastry halvah. Lollipop carrot cake dragée bonbon. Wypas wafer dragée carrot cake applicake bonbon bear claw powder wafer. Gummi bears I love gummies faworki.

CLOSED: New Photomanip Contest: Beyond Boundaries

Journal Entry: Sat Jun 1, 2013, 10:49 AM

Woot, woot!

Announcing the kick-off of the latest, greatest official photomanipulation contest! This contest is brought to you by #CRPhotomanipulation and #Photomanip101 in conjunction with #Fantasy-Glow, #PhotoManipulatorsx3, and #TheArtOfManipulation. It is graciously sponsored by #communityrelations

What is this contest?

"Beyond Boundaries" is a team competition. You will work in teams of 3 with a coach. Each person does their own work, but you all support and learn from one another.

The competition lasts 8 weeks (June 17th - August 11th). For the first four weeks, you will learn and share your knowledge with your teammates. Then, for the last four weeks, you will create your own manipulation. Your manipulation is NOT a collaboration, but you ARE allowed to ask for help, feedback, and advice from your teammates.

What if I go on vacation or have to be away?

That is absolutely fine. No problem. Just let us know, and we can work something out for you. No worries!

If you are a coach and have to go away, please just let the admins know. We can find a substitute coach for you or make other arrangements. :)

Who can play?

Anyone! We are looking for everyone from experts to newbies. Whether you have 10 Daily Deviations on your account already, or whether you don't even know what composition is-- this challenge is for you.

The only thing is this: Please come with a basic understanding of the tools of photomanipulation. Know how to extract stock from a background, what layers are, what the crop tool does. Know how to use a paintbrush and how to select stuff.

What will I have to do?

Week 1: You and your coach will decide what your strengths are, and you get to choose what you want to learn more about. You will set one goal for yourself, and you'll be judged against this goal at the end of the competition. (You can learn more than just one thing, but we want to have one thing we can measure.)

Weeks 2-4: Your coach will give you "lessons" or "homework" each week. This will be your chance to learn a new skill or to interact with your teammates. It is up to the coach as to how he or she wants to do it. Some may assign you a tutorial to try. Others may provide you with critique on your work and have you make corrections. Still others may have a chat where everyone can teach their skills and ask questions. It is up to your team as to how you want to do things, and it is your responsibility to be open and to work hard for your team.

Weeks 5-8: We will give your coach a theme, and he or she will share it with you. This is the theme you will use to create your own photomanipulation. You will have 4 weeks to create. During that time, you must do your own work, BUT your coach and your teammates can give you feedback and suggestions to help you improve. Be sure to take advantage of having a team!

How will the winners be chosen?

You will win by your TEAM, even though you are creating your photomanipulation individually. We hope this will encourage people to work better as a team and to help one another. There will be a team score that is the average of the individual scores, weighted by the teamwork score (or some reasonable combination thereof). We will be looking for quality and creativity but also improvement toward meeting your goal that you set at the beginning of the contest.

What are the prizes?

Each member of the winning team (including the coach) will receive 3,250 points and a 6-month subscription:

:bulletpink: 2,000 points from $Moonbeam13 and Community Relations
:bulletpink: 1,000 points from ^Aeirmid
:bulletpink: 250 points from =bmxking1000
:bulletpink: 6-month premium membership from $Moonbeam13 and Community Relations
:bulletpink: Exclusive stock pack from ^PirateLotus-Stock

Want to donate a prize? We would love for you to do so! Nothing is too small. Note #CRPhotomanipulation or #Photomanip101!

How do I sign up?

Next installment to be posted June 26, 2013 and the theme for the "Whoas" is Dessert.

Wanna suggest a theme? Note $Moonbeam13 with your ideas!

What is this?

Welcome to the latest official photomanipulation competition. This contest is a bit different; we have divided contestants into teams, which will be led by coaches. The contestants will train with their coaches for 4 weeks and then have 4 more weeks to create a photomanipuation on their own.

Registration for the contest is now closed. You can view the sign-up announcement here.

What are the rules?

The rules for this competition are as follows:

:bulletpink: If you can't take constructive criticism, please withdraw from the game now. You will be disqualified the very first time you attack your coach or teammates or give them a hard time for providing you with critique.

:bulletpink: Your coach and teammates cannot do anything FOR you; they can only guide you. You must do your own work.

:bulletpink: The final product of this contest is a photomanipulation to be created between July 15th and August 11th. You will receive the theme for this manipulation on July 15th through your coach. Your photomanipulation is due by 11:59 PM Pacific Time on Sunday, August 11th.

:bulletpink: We'll be looking at teamwork and team cohesion when we judge entries. It is important to be a good team player by keeping in touch with your coach and teammates and putting forth a genuine effort.

:bulletpink: If you need to be out of town or miss some time, don't despair! Just let your coach and ^Aeirmid know what's going on.

:bulletpink: You must use only legitimate resources in your photomanipulation, and you must credit all stock. (Note ^Aeirmid if you have questions.)

What is the schedule?

WEEK 1 (June 17)

Your coach should be in touch with you this week to find out more about you and what your strengths, weaknesses, and goals are. You should give your coach ONE goal of what you want to accomplish with training. (It's okay to have more than one, but there is one you should focus on.)

WEEKS 2 THROUGH 4 (June 24 through July 14)

You will work with your team and coach for 3 more weeks. You will receive assignments and feedback on your work.

WEEK 5 (July 15)

You will receive your theme from your coach. The theme will be somewhat vague, and you should interpret it as a team (meaning that the entries from each individual within the team should have similar... but not necessarily the SAME.... concepts). For example, if the theme is "dreams," one team may choose to create fantasy manipulations whereas another may do nightmares. It's up to your team to decide.

WEEKS 5-8 (July 22 - August 11)

You will create your own photomanipulation from the theme. You can ask your coach and/or teammates to give you guidance and feedback. However, they cannot do anything FOR you.

THE FINAL PHOTOMANIPULATIONS ARE DUE TO #Photomanip101 BY AUGUST 11, 11:59 PM US PACIFIC TIME. You can submit it to #Photomanip101 in the Beyond Boundaries Contest folder.

Prizes

The prizes are set for 3,250 points, a 6-month premium membership, and a premium stock pack for EACH player on the winning team (including the coach). =RoxRio has also donated a one-month subscription to each member of the second-place team. :heart:

Daily Deviation Report : May 2013

Fri May 31, 2013, 4:41 AM
Hallo, and welcome to the May edition of my Daily Deviation Report. What follows is a comprehensive feature of the Daily Deviations that I featured during the month of May 2013 in the Abstract and Surreal categories.

In terms of this collection, all of these images caught my eye in some way; whether it be through technical perfection, compositional intrigue, or the concept within. I am proud to present these works, and I applaud the relevant artists for their dedication and inspiration.

This month, the following artists helped me greatly with my Daily Deviation features by sending suggestions to me via note for works, or artists, that they'd like to see featured. While in some cases I chose another work from the artist, their input was nonetheless invaluable as these works would not have come to my attention otherwise.

For those of you who suggested work that I did not, or have yet to, feature, thanks are also due. I appreciate each and every suggestion that I receive, and while they may not always end up with a Daily Deviation feature, it does expose me to new artworks to critique, appreciate, and feature elsewhere. Most of the content of my Friday Feature articles come from suggestions by other artists, for example! So, please, don't be discouraged if you don't get a reply or don't see your suggestions featured: feel free to send more in future.

Thank-you for your time, and all the best for the coming month.

About Stock (and Typography)

Tue May 21, 2013, 7:13 AM

Did you know that no matter what gallery you submit to on dA, you HAVE to credit your sources? Hell yes!

This includes among other things images, textures, brushes, fonts etc., just to name the most commonly used Stock and Resource items.

The Photo Manipulation gallery and community f.e. takes great effort into crediting the materials used for their works and has some shining examples among its submissions, sometimes containing up to 50 seperate sources.

There are lots of great typography deviations that are pretty much Photo Manipulations, as they use a series of materials to create the final artwork.

It does not matter where you get your files from, even if the provider does not require credit, dA does require you to credit your sources.
Check out the deviantART Copyright Policy to learn more about this!

And there is really no excuse, the FAQs are your friends.
FAQ #81: How can I create links to other deviants, deviations, or websites?

And even if the materials are all your own, it does not hurt you to say so, now does it? It's one line:

"all materials my own"

Took me 2 seconds to type :B

Here are two examples of deviations that managed to credit their sources:

Make links to the materials you used or note that the materials are your own.

Eventually you are hurting yourself

If there is no credit about the materials used in an artwork, one has to assume that all material is your own. If it is however not your own material and someone notices it, they may assume that it is illegitimate and report your deviation for copyright infringement. This may result in your work being removed from dA for copyright violations. The best way to avoid confusion and protect yourself is to give proper credit!

Obviously these are all more or less legal reasons. I know many people don't care about this and/or think "nobody cares, nothing will happen to me", so here is a better reason:

Your deviation will NOT be featured as a Daily Deviation, if the stock is not credited.

What does this mean for Typography?

Nothing special, really. It is just a reminder, that yes, even typographers *le gasp* have to credit their sources! I came across several great pieces and DD suggestions today, which I cannot feature, due to the fact that they do not credit their sources.

While it is very obvious for all image-like material, it may not be as much for fonts.

In fact, I rarely come across deviations that credit the fonts which were used and their creators. Very often the fonts used are system fonts that are pre installed on the user's computer or they are free/bought fonts which do not require credit by the creator.
Also the legal/copyright status of fonts is not the same in all countries, especially in the US, fonts as such are not protected by copyright. Learn more about this at the article "Intellectual property protection of typefaces" on Wikipedia.

However, the legal status of fonts does not change dA's own house rules, so to speak. Credit is still required and part of the checkboxes you click when submitting a new deviation ;)

Basically by not crediting you are violationg dA's Submission Policy and Terms of Service. This means you may have to expect "moves" against your work and/or your account. This may sound more drastic than you think right now.

Please credit your sources, goddammit!

That's all.
