History...
Over the last seven years, Fella has grown to become the dashing, mysterious, and informative character that we know and love. During that period, his personal has style also evolved from flat and static to animated and vivacious. Today, we've taken him one step further by doing something monumental: we've given him actual hands! Now he has the ability to better express himself and more easily guide our community through the site.

Who?
DeviantART is looking for the community's help to decide on Fella's official 'pose' (aka selecting the definitive Fella). Because Fella's appearance has varied so drastically, we felt it was high time to figure out what he really looks like, once and for all. Think of Mickey Mouse's official pose. He is seen in a variety of scenarios and poses, but his official pose sticks in your mind because it's used most often.

What?
One of the five images above will be deemed the winner based on community opinion. The winning pose will be used in various ways all around deviantART and elsewhere, so vote for the Fella that best depicts your views on how he should represent!

How?
The winning Fella will be chosen through use of deviantART's Favorites system. The Fella with the most +favs (+fav's) at the time of voting conclusion wins. Deviants may vote for more than one Fella pose, but keep in mind that the total number of +favs for a specific pose will determine the winner. So, only vote for your truly favorite(s)! Any abuse of the Fav system or attempts to rig the vote will be met with appropriate action.

When?
Voting begins now and ends Tuesday, June 24th at 11:59 PM Pacific.

Holiday Card Project 2012

Tue Nov 6, 2012, 7:06 PM

It's back!  With the goal of bringing a little cheer to patients in the hospital during the holiday season, the deviantART Holiday Card Project connects deviants from around the world and applies their tremendous artistic abilities in designing and creating uplifting holiday cards.

In past years, the Project has received more than 5,000 cards sent in by more than 1,000 deviants from 50 different countries/political regions. Cards were then divvied up and distributed in-person by deviantART members to local Los Angeles, CA hospitals, with additional cards given to various hospitals in the U.S. and abroad for hospital staff members to hand out to patients.

The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is simple: do something nice for others. However, if you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who submits a card will be given a free one-month Premium Membership to deviantART.

Please read the following text for more details on the Holiday Card Project.

:holly:  What is the deviantART Holiday Card Project? The purpose of the Holiday Card Project is to have deviants create physical holiday cards for people who are hospitalized during the holiday season — helping to bring a little cheer to those who are undergoing a hospital stay.

:holly:  Who receives the cards? The cards will be distributed to both U.S. and international hospitals. Some cards will be delivered in-person by select deviants in the areas of the respective hospitals, while other cards will be distributed by hospital staff members. The patients who receive the cards age in range from children to seniors, and have illness or injuries that vary from mild to terminal.

:holly:  What should I write in a card?Be as creative as you’d like, but remember, the degree of illness for patients will vary from mild to terminal, so it is important to be cheerful. Some suggested greetings include, “Hope you’re feeling better,” “Thinking of you,” or “Have a nice day.” Try and stay away from “Get well soon” as it might not be appropriate for all patients. Be sure include a message of “Happy holidays” as the cards will be distributed for the holidays.

:holly:  Can I make a card myself?Of course. An 8.5" × 11" (21.59 cm x 27.94 cm) sheet of paper folded 2 ways to a total size of 4.25" × 5" (11.43 cm x 12.7 cm) works nicely. Though, there is no specific “set” size for cards. Use your best judgment. You can personally design and decorate cards by drawing, coloring, or painting. Construction paper, cardboard, markers, crayons, colored pencils, ribbon, etc., are all great to help make your card as special as possible.

:holly:  Can I use holiday cards purchased from a store?Absolutely. Store bought cards are great for the Holiday Card Project, but try and add a little extra flair and pizzazz by drawing on the inside of the card or including a few doodles. Use color to brighten up the presentation; be creative.

:holly:  How much is postage for sending a card?If you live in the U.S. and are sending an averaged sized card, it will probably cost one first-class stamp ($0.45). If you live in a country other than the U.S., the best thing to do is to check with your local postal agency for rates.

:holly:  Can I send more than one card? Please do. You can even put more than one card in the same envelope or package to save on postage. However, remember that quality is better than quantity. Sending one quality card that you put time and effort into is better than sending two cards that were thrown together.

:holly:  Will patients know who made their cards? The only way a patient will know who made a card is if you sign your name, which you are welcome to do. You may also include your e-mail address and/or deviantART URL in hopes of getting a reply; though, that can’t be guaranteed. If you wish to send a card anonymously, you may.

:holly:  Can non-deviants participate in the Project?Definitely. The Holiday Card Project accepts cards from all participants who are willing to contribute to a good cause. The Project is a great way for schools, clubs, church groups, or family and friends to get together and work on a fun activity. No deviantART affiliation is necessary.

:holly:  What do I get out of this? The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is to try and bring a little cheer to those undergoing a hospital stay. The patients and their families are deeply touched by the kindness and caring from those who take time to create and send cards.

Additionally, once the Holiday Card Project has been completed, all registered deviantART members will be given a free one-month Premium Membership just for sending in a card. In order to be awarded a Premium Membership, please include your username on a piece of paper separate from the holiday card. Premium Memberships will be distributed no later than January 31, 2013.

:holly:  When is the deadline for the Holiday Card Project? All cards should be received by December 15, 2012.

:rudolph:  Where do I send a card? Please use the following address:

deviantART, Inc.
Holiday Card Project
7095 Hollywood Blvd., #788
Hollywood, CA 90028
U.S.A.

Please remember to include your deviantART username on a separate piece of paper when mailing in a holiday card. To ensure that you successfully receive your free Premium Membership, it is vitally important that your username be written in such a manner that it easy to read!

:stare:  Rules and TermsLimit one one-month Premium Membership per participant. DeviantART reserves the right to deem any card contributed to the Project as unacceptable and therefore ineligible for a Premium Membership.

:megaphone:  Spread the WordIf you’d like to help promote the Holiday Card Project, please use the image below and link back to this journal.

:note:  Past Projects

:holly:  Where do I direct questions and concerns? Please note that many common concerns have already been addressed in the above questions and answers. Take care when reading the Project's description because there's a good chance it already contains an answer to your question. For any remaining issues, please leave a comment in this journal.

Happy holidays from deviantART!

Mon Dec 24, 2012, 11:12 PM by $Heidi:iconheidi:
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through dA,
Not a troll was stirring, nor Grinch in his sleigh.
Deviations were hung in digital Galleries with care,
In hopes that +Favourites soon would be there.

The n00bs were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Daily Deviations danced in their heads.

And Fella in his 'kerchief, and +spyed with his night-light,
Had just settled down to log-off for the night,
When over in the Forums there arose such a clatter,
Fella sprang back online to see what was the matter.

To the browser window he flew like a flash,
Tore open the tabs and refreshed the cache.
When what to his art-loving eyes should appear,
But an animated sleigh and eight commissioned reindeer,
With a little old driver, so creative and slick,
Fella knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than broadband, his reindeer were famed,
After all his favorite artforms, Santa had them all named.
"Now, Manga! Now, Photos! Now, Literature and Crafts!
On, Digital! On, Typography! On, Animations in Flash!

From the greatest masterpiece to the simplest scrawl
I'll fly 'round the world, inspiring them all!"
Fella heard him exclaim, as he flew off in the night,
"Happy Christmas to all, from your favorite website."

Comic-Con: Day 3

Sun Jul 15, 2012, 2:37 AM by $Heidi:iconheidi:
Saturday kicked off Day 3 of Comic-Con, and the crowds poured onto the convention floor to start the weekend in Geek Style.

At noon, deviantART hosted our final panel: How to Supercharge Your deviantART Profile Like the Masters.  Moderated by none other than our fearless ninja, Angelo (aka +spyed), we were honored to have the following superstars share their deviantART experiences with the crowd:

- Adam Warren (*AdamWarren -- “The Dirty Pair,” “Empowered”)
- Mark Brooks (`diablo2003, from Marvel Comics)
- Jim Zubkavich (~Zubby -- Project Manager of Creative Services, Udon Entertainment)
- Dave Elliott (=DeevElliott -- “Heavy Metal Magazine”)
- Wenqing Yan (`yuumei, creator of “Knite,” “1000 W0RDS”)
- Kevin Eastman (=Kevineastman -- co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
- Chris Sanders (`alohalilo creator of “Lilo & Stitch”)

It was truly a remarkable and informative hour.  Brains were picked from every angle and our panelists described everything from the importance of joining deviantART, to how maintaining one's Profile Page can help launch a career.  (Fear not!  If you weren’t able to attend in person, word on the street is that video highlights may be showing up on #hq in the near future.)

+spyed hosts our "Supercharge Your Profile" panel.

As things were winding down, each panelist was asked to summarize the best piece of advice they wanted to impress on the crowd.  The following is a quick soundbite of what each had to say.

Be persistent, relentless, and unstoppable, even when you want to stop. Especially when you want to stop.
-Adam Warren (*AdamWarren)

Thrive on criticism.
-Mark Brooks (`diablo2003)

Create something that's genuine and something you like.
-Jim Zubkavich (~Zubby)

Don’t be a lurker. Be positive and that will come back to you.
-Dave Elliott (=DeevElliott)

Don't be afraid.  Everyone starts out not being awesome.  Immerse yourself in the process, and before you know it, you'll be great.
-Wenqing Yan (`yuumei)

Whatever you think is art... is art. Period.
-Kevin Eastman (=Kevineastman)

Whatever you do, try and put a story in your work.  It will make you a better artist.
-Chris Sanders (`alohalilo)

With our last panel out of the way, we were free to focus our energies in other directions, while the deviantART booth in Artists’ Alley buzzed along like clockwork.

~DaneRot spends his downtime by sketching Hulk!

Besides the myriad amazing reasons we had to be psyched about coming to Comic-Con, this year was especially exciting, because we just launched our Premium Content Platform earlier this week. It’s always a good feeling to launch a new feature that we know will enrich the lives of deviants, but to launch something that directly benefits artists and generates them real earnings, well, you can understand that we’d be brimming with excitement to spread that news to everyone we meet.

Friend of deviantART Uwe Maurer of Ambient Design brought +spyed and me ($Heidi) to The Art Department’s booth to talk about some really exciting things.  Most of them we have to keep hush-hush for now, but what we can say is that there may be some interesting ways for Premium Content to kick-start their students’ portfolios and careers.

We were also thrilled to hear that, while we were running around Comic-Con, Bleeding Cool wrote an article about the potential impact Premium Content offers independent artists.

Since we had a camera crew hanging around for some interviews we planned to do with artists, we thought we’d learn a little more about the artists that make up Comic-Con. Today, +spyed was able to make his way through the artists sitting in the Small Press section. As you can see, there were some pretty big hearts inside the artists in Small Press.

Walking around outside of Artists’ Alley also meant getting to spend time at some of the other booths we’d been rushing past, promising to return to for two days now. $marioluevanos and $LaurenKitsune took a few moments to dig through bins to recreate the deviantART logo on the giant LEGO wall!

Last year (which was deviantART’s first year sponsoring Artists' Alley), we offered two scholarships to artists emerging artists who'd always dreamt of going to Comic-Con.  It was such a success that, this year, we offered six scholarships, and set them up near the deviantART booth.

On Thursday, we hosted ~mleiv and *larkinheather, while Friday saw the arrival of ~UNDERANANGEL and ~SpyrosVerykios-ComiX. Today, we had super artists and deviants ~Mogorron and `sambees. Though weary from travel, they were excited to display their works in Artists' Alley, meet professionals in their industry, and have their portfolios reviewed by the experts!

That about wraps up Day 3 of Comic-Con, and we all know what that means -- tomorrow is the final and saddest day of Comic-Con.    However, we're trying to make the good cheer last as long as we can before we start X-ing out the calendar days until Comic-Con 2013.

History of April Fool's dAy!

Tue Apr 2, 2013, 9:17 AM
This article is written for the #projecteducate's Community Week as well as #ArtHistoryProject's dA Related month.

Here is a brief history of April Fool's pranks deviantART has played on it's members. Please note that information is still missing (mostly older years) - this is because some April Fool's pranks were never recorded or are lost in the millions of journals on the site.

2001 - "°jark is Arrested"

°jark is arrested in Disneyland for cutting in line and refusing to move to the back.

2004 - "British Takeover"

April Fool's Day 2004 marked the day the British took over deviantART. New rules were enforced on that day, including spelling "color", "colour" and saying "Cheers guv'nor" instead of "Thank You".

"Please note that any American who uses the term "soccer" will have their IP banned from deviantART and their gallery purged. Not only that, but the last 10 people who have commented on that American's user page will also be banned. Let that be an incentive for you Americans to refer to the beautiful game as FOOTBALL and not "soccer". No exceptions will be made."

2005

  • $devart received the Deviousness Award.

2006

Deviousness-theinternet by ^bradleysays

2007 - "Changes to the Help Desk"

This year sparked changes to the Help Desk, specifically, it was going to be a subscriber based service. Non-subscribing members would need to pay $29.95 per year to have access to the Help Desk, a reduced price of $19.95 was made available to deviants who only wanted live help.

2008 - "Mudkips"

This day was the day of the Mudkips (a Pokemon). User's icons were changed to this icon made by `Chimpantalones.

Deviants could not change their icon back until April 2nd. As well as the icons, ~Mudkips received the Deviousness Award.

2009 - "Symbol Changes"

Symbol changes were the main prank for 2009's April Fool's Day. All $taff Members, `seniors, ^gallery moderators, and MN@s were given the ! (banned/deactivated) symbol.

Beta Testers got a unique symbol change by receiving the snowman symbol.

Other pranks this year included icon changes and upside down text across the site.

2010 - "Team Gaga/Edward/Jacob/Seeker"

Team Gaga. Team Jacob. Team Edward. Team Seeker. All icons were changed to one of these teams, and each team has three different avatars. Again, users could not change avatars until April 2nd, and could not "swap teams".

Here are the icons:

Team Gaga (Lady Gaga)

Team Jacob (Twilight Saga)

Team Edward (Twilight Saga)

Team Seeker (Legend of the Seeker)

But clearly, Team Gaga was the best. ;p `LadyGaga also received Seniority and the Deviousness Award on April Fool's Day that year.

Llama Badges were also launched on this day!

2011 - "A Trollface April Fool's"

Trollface was the theme of 2011's April Fool's Day with Trollface himself appearing throughout user's message centers and deviation pages. °trollface also received the Deviousness Award.

Several Trollface T-Shirts & Gear were made available in the deviantART +shop until sold out.

2012 - "Feline Overlords Takeover"

Aprilfools2012 by ^bradleysays

`MajorGeneralWhiskers, leader of Feline UpRising (FUR) had taken over deviantART and kidnapped deviantART's mascot, Fella. Deviants had to submit 15,000 cat-related deviations to the Free Fella gallery to save Fella from the Feline Overlords. Fella was freed a few hours after the takeover. Anyone who helped free Fella was awarded the Whiskers profile badge.

`MajorGeneralWhiskers received the Deviousness Award on that day.

Aprilfools2012-deviousness by ^bradleysays

Among the Free Fella movement, was cat-related facts popping up throughout the site (see below)

Aprilfools2012-catfacts by ^bradleysays

When browsing, some thumbnails were changed to cat-related images (but changed back after hovering).

2013 - "deviantHEART.com"

devianHeart (1) by ^bradleysays

deviantART.com had released a new dating website for artists, deviantHEART.com

Deviants who took part had to take a short survey about what they are "looking for" in a partner.

deviantheart survey by ^bradleysays

The answers did not influence the results at all, because each deviant's perfect match were randomly generated.

Aprilfools by ^bradleysays

That concludes the history of deviantART's April Fool's Pranks, until next year! :salute:
