MOVE on 'Overpricing': About 'Overpricing' things

[My Opinion Versus Everyone's] Please remember these are simply my opinions and are not meant to imply that you should agree or disagree nor should these prove to be offensive in any way; if I do come across displeasingly then you have my apologies beforehand, thank you.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I see a lot of comments here and there that go something like this...
"50 points?? Why would I pay 50 points for an adopt..."
or...
"100 points? Are you sure you're not overpricing that...?!"

And I'm sure many of you have seen similar comments, now I understand that points aren't the easiest things to accumulate when you're fresh into dA or even well into your time here, as I was once a 13 year old kid who joined dA and got excited over her first 10 points :la: ...which I kept and refused to spend because it took a while's worth of designing adopts to get that ten points.

A while?
About ... oh.. over a good hour or so?

And in reality if I were 'convert' that now, of course considering the amount dA takes, I get 10 cents. That's $0.10 USD.

Minimum wage over here is $8 an hour and you get more for babysitting a kid --I don't know about you but industry standard for art goes up to the thousands range (don't believe me? Look it up) for something you can get for roughly $200 in dA, give or take a few +/-$50's etc, by artists anybody reasonable would deem professional, and of course I'm not saying it's reasonable to sell them at industry standard prices since most of us don't use art we commission, commercially.

I'm just saying that $0.10 for an hour's work, gives you about $1 after 10 hours.

That's... enough to buy you a burger after a hard's day work. Minus the drink and fries :)

--Oops! I forgot to include tax. Never mind! No burger at all.

Sure, when you don't/can't buy points and you don't get commissions at the moment (you will! :D Just keep drawing and you will be noticed! It's what I did :aww: If you don't believe me on that you can read a previous entry-> [link]), it doesn't mean you have to be irrational and make someone feel bad for pricing art, designs, etc for something as insufficient as 10 points. Or 50, or even 100. Because technically once we convert that to real money -since points don't buy any food- we get $1.

What I'm suggesting isn't that you go on a shopping spree and purchasing things priced at 100 points when all you have is 100 or so, just be thoughtful before commenting :)

Chances are, as I know there's no such thing as "all the time", most people -even people and friends I know-, will price commissions at anything from 4 points for a fully rendered image, and 100 points as their max.

I understand that some of us may still be 'amateurs' in this business (even I'm not professional right now!), but you know, instead of producing creative work for $0.10-$1 or maybe even $5 an hour on here, they could all be working a job for $8/hour (at least!), or if not old enough, then babysitting for $15/hour (or more!), or even doing other work that doesn't really give us the privilege so see the art we do and purchase for 10 points now do we?

Don't under-value yourself!
That's also another thing I need to write about, it's art style.
As long as you stick to your own style, even if you're not even sure of a style yet or have one that's you yet, there's still not another person in the world that can perfectly replicate yours.
Also implying you can't replicate your idols' works unfortunately--take inspiration, yes! But never draw like them in that sense, frankly speaking.

So as long as you're doing art the way you feel it should be done, then there's no reason for your work to never be unoriginal or invaluable.  It took me a good year to settle on a style I find suits me and is still undergoing changes when I feel like I need to improve upon something, and for some it takes longer or shorter, but it's what attracts people to your work!

It's the same thing with you, what if you looked like every super model out there? No one would be pretty anymore, we'd just be another Barbie/Ken doll in a sea of other Barbies and Ken dolls!

So there's my little bit on self-appreciation. And for those that find it hard to be self confident, I can sympathize but that's no excuse to not try :)

So anyhow, don't complain if someone's pricing work at anything under 100 points because it doesn't matter how 'awful' you think their work is, just remember they're not pricing it at $100.

It's $1, mind you.

You would feel just as bad if you were pricing your work at $1 and have someone imply that your work isn't worth $1.
$1 that probably in the hands of most kids and teens is spent at the school vendor for a bag of chips.

Weigh your options Wisely.

I've had people tell me 1000 points sounds ridiculous, and yes that's the thing with big numbers!
We think "1 thousand" and our jaws drop because we associate that with $1,000.

But even in other countries that aren't familiar with USD, some currencies are at an exchange rate of 1,000 ___ to $1.

But either way, as hard as it may be to come by points without many means of earning them, it doesn't excuse you from thinking how your words and actions can affect others who at a first glance you might feel "overprice" things.

No one likes working for less than the minimum, and $1, let alone 10 cents, is far below that minimum standard.

Think more; wisely. Be less impulsive and rationalize for a change.

And imagine yourself being told that you're not worth 10 cents.

:) Because you and I know you're worth a lot more than that.

Supplements/Edits: (things I add after reading comments that remind me of things I should add :D)

-Just because you can't afford something, does not mean it's overpriced. Just because you can't buy a laptop, does not mean it's overpriced.
Just because you can't buy a design/art, does not mean it's overpriced.

-I understand that 80 :points:=$1 ,but that money is virtually useless -no pun intended- for you as a living person, unless converted and dA takes 20 percent. But even then, 100 points is only $1.25... Okay so now you can get a burger.

-And yes, please don't under-value yourself once again. You can charge 25 points for an adoptable, like I once did, and be successful, and I always recommend starting small! Not too small as in 1 point, but 25 is a popular and reasonable starting point :) ....noooo pun intended xD This doesn't mean you're unappreciating yourself by undercharging, this just means you're being smart by actually making 25 points than if you priced it at 1,000 right of the bat and made 0 :) Just make sure that when you finally get a degree in art you still don't do the 25 points if you get my drift~

-Haha, and yes quality does matter of course! I wouldn't pay 100 points for a poorly colored base either, as mentioned in a comment, but for clarification, I do mean original art! :) Something someone put effort into!

-And this one is important, but I too thought a lot of things were so 'pricey' when I first joined dA. I had never sold a piece of art before and whatever work I did was requests, so I had no idea how to price things. That's when I looked to the already existent community of artists who took commissions to see how I should price my own things. When I saw prices like $5 or more eye-opening, 500 points, I recoiled a bit and wondered if that was a good idea. I didn't know of the industry standard or what people were even willing to value their art as since I'd been working free. But this is the real world, and no time is spent free :( Even when we're in school and don't need the money for 'food and rent' etc, we could be studying or doing other work but it's time we invest to bring you art.
I understand that at first it may be a lot to get used to, but I never commented on anything saying it was overpriced, not only because I didn't feel like I had the right to even make someone feel bad--that's up to the commissioner I believe to point something like that out. But because I knew that without me actually experiencing the work load myself and taking time to learn the way this "works", I can't judge fairly. So please reconsider before making comments like "50 points is not worth is", because it makes you look bad, not the artist :)

-Oh haha, I forgot to mention this too! Also consider raising your prices for the benefit of others :meow: Why? Because let's say you're professional and you charge $5 (exaggerating for the purpose of easier visualization xD), and other professionals charge $100-200 for the same 'full picture' commission.
Under simple circumstances, you'd look at those two prices and even if you had a good $300 on you, I think we'd all go for the $5, at least first :) Because that's just natural and it's fine.
But you know what you should do? Raise your prices, benefiting yourself, and the market. It's awfully nice for the consumer but not only are you going to be overworking yourself, others are going to really lose out on a lot of business too!

-By the way, Art is a creative business, you can't price the priceless :)

-OH, I must not forget to mention, this is going to be one of my biggest tips.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.

Build your reputation! When I first took commissions I spent 6-7 hours on a 1000 point commission which is ($12 not converted, $10 converted), meaning I made 70 points an hour. I then got a chibi commission I spent 3-4 hours on and made only $2. The initial time investment is FINE. It helps to start when you're younger and not needing the money to live, but as logical as you find it to not spend the big bucks on some company you don't know, it's the same case with art. How can you trust the artist will finish it on time? Or even at all? Or that it'll come out good? Chances are you INSTINCTIVELY DO NOT. So build people's trust and show them you can get the work done. :) With practice, the same quality image you spent 4 hours on, will reduce to 1 hour. As with me xD It's different for everyone, but trust me haha.

Inspiring words from contributors

~Cirprius "I agree. Life is amazing, and an adventure through its ups and downs. Being born, is the best thing that ever happened to me"

*kinzerkinz "Heart here! Here! Heart

~Quezecotyl "Yes! Even though I can be seen as overly optimistic, there are those days when I can't even smile. But I agree, we just have to remember in those moments that without moments of despair there, moments of happiness and joy wouldn't really exist. And that those rainy days won't be forever. Live to make more and more great and nostalgic memories. Besides, laughing is so much fun! I love life and I hope for many years ahead. Boogie!"

=Rawliett "I absolutely love this! dA and the world could use more positiveness to fight against the negative. I personally love and cherish ever second of life I have because I never know when it's going to end. Life if beautiful, even the hardships we face day to day.

The fleeting time is cruel; it is so easy to get left behind in the dark. Yet, it is such a wonderful thing because when you cannot find the light…it continues on to give you time and opportunities to find it. Though most people don't realize this or aren't sure of how to catch up. Not to mention (in the theme of keeping up with things), we must learn to pace ourselves in the present for it has not yet finished teaching us what we will need to know for the obstacles that lie in the path ahead. Those obstacles try to break us down but we can overcome them and become even stronger. Life is all about faith and courage. Humans need to know how to believe in something they cannot see to give them something to live for and these things we find faith in are often times very positive things.

Also, so many people think that you need to be strong to be "one of the best" and always happy. However, it is not brute strength that gets anybody anywhere. It's the courage in our hearts that gives us an unstoppable force that allows us to be everything we hold inside.

Life passes by in the blink of an eye. Every now and again it seems to move in slow motion, though in reality it's moving at the speed of light. Take hold of what you have today and enjoy everything about it, for you never can be certain what tomorrow will greet you with. It can either be positive or negative, for each day is what YOU decide.

AND NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE SAY OR DO, ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU NEEDN'T BE AFRAID TO LOOK UP!!!"
Thank you Heart
Sadly, all their deviations are in storage. :c

*twicehalf "Simone de Beauvoir: 'In fact, even when he claims that it is not so, no man wishes himself other than he is, since for all living persons being means making oneself be.'

And again: 'The secret of happiness is to live like everyone else while being like no other.'"

=Riemea "Live is a valuable thing. Not everyone is allowed to live their life the way they want, spending it with doing things they love. Not everyone has the opportunity, not everyone can afford it. We should keep that in mind, and cherish every day, because no matter how you live your life, it will end one day for sure. Whether that's tomorrow or in 50 years is not something we can foresee. But we can try to just live to the best of our ability so that when the time comes, we can proudly say: "I regret nothing."

TeamWork- round 2!

Journal Entry: Sat May 18, 2013, 2:23 AM
We're jumping right into a new round of our TeamWork-project!

We were really overwhelmed by the attendance last time, and since so many wanted another round, here we go :la: !

For all those who don't know the project yet, here are some answers to all the questionmarks over your head!

What is the project about?

The aim is to team up two artists to achieve a close and individual learning-experience.
One of the two will be the teacher, whereas the other will be the student. (But our teachers will learn through this project just as much, I'm sure :giggle: )

Teachers will present assignments to their students and provide them with tools, techniques and lessons to achieve the goal they both decided on.
In the end we'll present all the finished assignments in a big chat event and on our group page!

There also might be prizes for Best TeamWork, Best Final Artwork and Strongest Improvement! :eyes:

We will provide all teams with tips, rules and guidelines on teaching, as soon as all teams signed up for the project. :)

When's this happening?

The project consists of three major parts:

:bulletblue: The sign-up phase: Sat May 18 - Sat May 25
:bulletblue: The TeamWork phase (4 weeks) Sun May 26 - Sun 23 June
:bulletblue: Regular chats with all teams to see how the project is going for you, every weekend in the TeamWork phase

I want to be a teacher!

If you'd like to be a teacher, don't be shy!
There is always something you can share with somebody, and most likely there is someone who wants to know about that topic!

Every artform is very welcome!
Writers, photographers, painters, musicians, any kind really!

Read more about the sign-up process here

I'd love to be a student!

You always wanted to know how to take a certain photo, how to paint a portrait or how to write a poem?
You're in the right place for that! Hopefully we can find you a mentor to teach you this!

Read more about the sign-up process here

FAQ

:bulletblue: May my team-partner and I teach each other (in different fields as well) so we're both student and teacher in the same team?

- Yes, definitely. Please let us know though! ;)

:bulletblue: Could I teach one person but be a student of another?

- Only if you find the time to fulfill both roles for the period of time.

NEW BL/ind Dating Service

Journal Entry: Thu May 23, 2013, 12:54 PM

~Dracushit here again, with an exciting new offer. Our top looove scientists have developed a new dating formula to help those who are unlucky in love, like me. Check out me hitting on Kobra. Yeah, I know, how are we not dating already? He's a tough nut to crack. But thanks to the new Better Living Industries Dating Service, I've got someone to tide me over until Kobra realizes what's up. When I joined this program, they paired me with "your right hand." At first I thought "Hey, is this some kind of sick joke?" But it turns out that me and my right hand are perfect for each other. It never sasses me or lets me down, and it loves white gloves as much as I do. Thanks, BL/ind!

I know you must be thinking "Damn, how can I get a piece of this action?" Well, fortunately for you, BL/ind has decided to let Killjoys in on this. Just complete this quiz, post the answers here or note them to me, and send me (~Dracushit10 points. "Whaaat, a fee?" Yes, a fee, we're not going to match you up with the love of your life for free. This is serious stuff. Plus, the proceeds all go to #MCRdeviantClub for affiliating with BL/ind. No need to thank me.

When all of you have sent in your little applications, you'll get a message from me with the name of your true love (and I'll give you their responses, too, so you know it's meant to be.) If you slip in an extra 5 points, I just may be tempted to pair you up with ~FunGhoulio, regardless of your answers. In any case, you have to send in the 10 points to get your pairing. No points, no pairing. All that fan fiction you're planning on writing? Gone.

So are you ready to meet the love of your life? Here are the questions, specially formulated by BL/ind scientists for maximum loviness.

1. If you were a BL/ind pill, you would be:

    a. Room-Clearing Pill (turns your face blue; you lay down and pretend to be dead until unwelcome guests leave)
    b. Anti-Anxiety Pill (replaces frightening thoughts with an image of Korse skipping through a meadow of flowers)
c. "NOOO" Pill (when something traumatic happens, it deepens your voice so you can fall to your knees and scream "NOOOOOOO!")
d. Thug Life Pill (makes every sentence rhyme, as if you were rapping; has no effect on users who are too "white and nerdy")

2. You see [YOUR FAVORITE KILLJOY] trapped in a BL/ind Criminal Pod. Your reaction:

a. Bang your head against the glass until cracks form
b. Pull out a walkie-talkie and say "IT'S GO TIME." Five Killjoys, each holding three big guns, burst through the ceiling and are quickly apprehended by BL/ind staff
c. Cry
d. Ask him to "hook you up" with free medication

3. What is your favorite kind of music?

a. Beeps and blorps, with the occasional "twaaaaaang"
b. Elevator music
c. Smooth jazz
d. Incomprehensible screams

4. What is your ideal Battery City job?

a. Preschool teacher
b. Psychiatrist
c. Grafitti-cleaner
d. Old man who yells at children to get off his yard

5. What are your plans for the future?

a. Build a happy life in the city
b. Usurp Dr. Death Defying and become new King of the DJs
c. Cry
d. Smoke Dracijuana and drive in circles around a cactus

FotoFriday: Maastunnel Syndrome

Journal Entry: Tue May 21, 2013, 9:38 PM

Welcome to our fifth FotoFriday session at #CRLiterature!

Update!

Remember, you have until the Thursday of May 30th to comment on this journal with a link to the deviation inspired by the image below! We can't wait to see what you produce.

Two months ago, we relaunched FotoFriday at #CRLiterature, and here's the next installment. Last week, *ShadowedAcolyte gave us this image as a prompt:

And here are the pieces inspired by that image:

Snow-globeShe had a little snow-globe in her room, and in that perfect moment of twilight it would send incandescent flittering light all across the ceiling. It seemed that it was trying to break the glass of which it was made, trying to set free the beauty it confined. She would pick it up and shake it, but it was not snow that would flurry and fuss in the confinement, but little specks of jewels. When it sat quietly on her bedside table, it was peaceful and white, with some of her bedroom-wall blue forced into its hues. In it lived two beings, so restrained and yet so free. The first, a woman, grounded to the floor and touching the glass with her bar Flight The look of triumph slips off his face as he hovers six feet above the sand. He waves his arms, straining to sink back to earth. He doesn't move any lower. He can't.

She tries not to laugh, but it feels so good to see him with out his cloak of arrogance.

“But how am I supposed to land?”

“Didn't you finish the chapter?” she asks.

“I never read that far. There's never anything important.”

“Right,” she says. And this time her laughter won't be contained. It's spilling out around the edges of her self control so hard she's shaking.

“Stop it. It's not funny. Get me down.”

I
Jump StartJump Start

we camped in the desert almost every weekend
doctors said relaxation would help, getting away would help
isolation did drive us to shelter in each other
a haven with all the frailty of a tent flap
on days like that day: sky a faded, salt-flat grey,
clouds carrying someone else’s rain
pushed by grit-laden wind that stripped
saliva from spent lips and sweat from two scratched backs

until she came sprinting over the privy dune, waving a stick
then the thunder broke in me, an adrenal flash flood
that swept my sense away, chest seized, near drowning
and I leaped, as if by terrified joy I could become a bird
limbs hooking the win

Please be kind enough to share your thoughts and comments (maybe even favorite if you like their work). They've posted their work for the world to see, and we thank them for getting involved!

How does FotoFriday Work?

Every other Friday we will post a photograph from a deviant's gallery that we find intriguing and interesting. Using this photograph as a prompt, you are encouraged to write somethinganythingbased on it. It doesn't matter what form of writing, how much you write or even whether you end up with a complete piecethis is all about the prompt and what it inspires!

Are there any rules?

There is only one ruleRESPECT THE PHOTOGRAPHER! At the end of the day, we are using their image and therefore should be offering full credit to them in our artists' comments. We also ask that no one uses the image as a preview image.
Please note: the #CRLiterature team has asked photographers via #CRPhotography if we can use their work in this way. If you are a photographer who is interested in you work possibly being used, please sign up via #CRPhotography!

So, I'll keep it short.

The concept is simple. You draw a sketch every day and post it online. Or at least every other day for those busy folks! There is no time limit or requirements, this is basically all about self-improvement and applying yourself!

People who maybe doing this so far (or people I will be constantly poking for sketches):

If I'm missing someone please tell me! ;v;

I'm planning to make the official start date next Monday, 5/20/13, to give some people time to finish with school and what not. Of course if you feel like drawing before then, I'm not gonna stop you!

In the end of 4-5 months, I plan to compile a book of sketches (with your permission of course). The profit from sales of the book would be donated to a charity (that we will vote on). Self-improvement and helping others, yaaaaaay! ;v;

FAQ
Where do I post my sketches?
There is a folder in the gallery that corresponds to the current month we are in. Please post in the correct month!

Are there any requirements?
Nope. Other than try to post every day. You can draw whatever you want!

Is there quality control?
...Nope. Of course, this is about improving yourself so I would advise you to draw things that are outside your comfort zone or experiment around! There are a lot of drawing days ahead of us so there is a lot of time to do that! ;v;

Can we post old things to the group that is not related to sketch a day?
No, sorry. Just post sketches that you drew for sketch a day here, please!

Can I just sketch dump once a week or post in places other than dA?
Sure, if that is what you are comfortable with! Try to have a consistent uploading schedule, though, like once a week on Saturdays or something similar. But I would prefer if you try to post in dA since it's just easier to find them all in one place here. OvO

What if I get too busy or something happens and I can't draw...?
That's ok too. RL comes first! If you need to take a break, I won't put it against you, and neither will anyone else. Jump back in when you are ready! We will be here for you when you come back.

It's pass the starting date, can I still join?
YES. Just note the group! I will add you to the list!

Share Your Writing Process

Sun May 19, 2013, 4:28 PM
:new: Writing this journal, I feel I prematurely posted it. The goal was to get others talking about the writing process and how they approach it, but the emphasis became my work, which is a no-no! So with that in mind, here are some questions to take into consideration (and a silly one, because why not).

  • Do you feel your writing process is 'fixed,' or that it changes depending on what you are writing?

  • Do you edit as you write? How does this affect the finished product?

  • How do you feel your process is unique compared to others?

  • How come when you call a wrong number, someone is always home?

In addition, if you would like to get involved with this journal on another level and would like to display your writing as you develop it and answer questions about your process, do leave a comment saying so with a link (on dA) to where the writing can be found so that others can watch it progress and keep me updated (I'll most likely watch those that participate, to stay updated).
