Dialectical Dessertism: The Contest

Journal Entry: Sun May 19, 2013, 9:00 PM

Photobucket

It has long been debated just how cake and pie came to be bitter enemies (and occassional allies against other desserts).  Some say it started in the Middle Ages when butter was first used for both unequally awesome desserts.

While others say it was when cake became a CV and the power went to her head!

At still yet, there is the rumor that is started when pie failed his sobriety test and blamed it all on cake for keeping him out too late.

But maybe none of those are the real story.  That's where YOU come in.

What's this Contest About?

It's pretty simple.  You're going to answer a very simple question.  What is the origin of the pie/cake debacle?  How you go about doing that is completely up to you.  But since you have complete creative freedom to write history, we're expecting some very interesting (to say the least) renditions.

What's Going to be Judged?

:bulletblue: Both poetry and prose will be accepted

:bulletblue: Minimum of 500 words and Maximum of 3,000 for prose entries

:bulletblue: Maximum of 50 lines for poetry entries

:bulletblue: Eclairs are not permitted*

:bulletblue: Make sure you proofread. Bad grammar is inexcusable.

:bulletblue: Obviously, your submission must be created for this contest.

:bulletblue: All entries should be noted to `GrimFace242 before the deadline.

:bulletblue: Cheesecake and brownies are also banned.  Mentions of either will result in immediate disqualification**

*Eclairs are only allowed if they are shown in a light that is fitting to their horribleness.
**Unless it's really funny.  Then we'll allow it.

Start Date: May 20th, 2013

End Date: June 21st, 2013; Midnight EST

Emoticon Tournament

Sun May 19, 2013, 4:00 AM

:la:After months of waiting and anticipation, the "Secret Contest" I had planned is here! I bring you, the Emoticon Tournament!:la:

As some of you may remember, !DryBones44 hosted an epic tournament called the “Multi-Round Emoticon Drop Out Contest”. [link]

The tournament was a blast and there were many participants! And I am going to revise it!:omg: So, here is what’s going to happen:

Details:

After all the participants are gathered, I will use random.org to match the participants up randomly. I will then select a topic, and then you and your opponent will face off and make an emote based on the theme. You will have 1 week to make the emote, and then our judges will decide the winner of each match up.

If you win your match, you will move on to the next round, and face off another winner and have a new theme to emote for. But if you do not win your match, you will be eliminated from the competition. You will then get a special feature, and wear a unique competitors badge.:)

This process continues until we get to our final 2 or 3 (depending on what number it happens to be at the end).

In the event that there are 3 finalists, they will all compete against each other and the judges will choose them in a 1st, 2nd, 3rd style.

In the event there are 2 finalists, the 2 finalists will face off like normal, and the 2 semi-finalists that didn’t win will face off for 3rd.

I am also going to make special badges for semi-finalists, finalists, and the winner!:wow:

Prizes:

1st Place

3000 :points:

A free pixel emote plushy of your emoticon OC

1 month feature on `IceXDragon’s page

2nd Place

2000 :points:

A free pixel emote plushy of your emoticon OC

3rd Place

1000 :points:

A free pixel emote plushy of your emoticon OC

*All prize donations are welcome*

Guidelines:

  • Anybody may sign up! No matter if you have never made an emoticon before, or have been making emotes for 5 years, you are welcome to participate.:boogie:

  • Be nice to all competitors! This is a fun and friendly event; if you do not win your match up, don’t get upset and start bashing people, instead just have fun. That’s what this event is for.;)

  • All of your entries must include an emote somewhere in the piece. It’s not called the “Emoticon Tournament” for nothing, is it?

  • You entry must relate to the round’s theme somehow. If it is not completely obvious in the deviation itself, explain it in the description of the deviation.

  • All entries must say that it is for this tournament in the description. To avoid confusion.

  • When you are finished with your entry, note me with it and I will add it to the list.

  • Your entry must be on time. Exceptions may be made though if the first judge hasn’t finished judging yet, but after that, you will be eliminated.

  • If your opponent does not make their emote on time, you will win the match by default and go to the next round.

  • Bases and resources may be used, but we expect you to do most of the work yourself.

  • All entries must follow the official rules of deviantART.

Judges:

There will be 5 judges for this event, and they are:

:iconhappy-gurl::iconwaluigi-prower::icona-kid-at-heart::iconicefire8521::icondully101:

:happybounce:

Sign-up:

If you would like to sign up for this event, simply comment on this article saying you want to participate, and I will add you to the list.:)

Sign-ups will close on June 1st, 2013 at 11:59.59 PM CDT.

Remember, anyone may sign up!:happybounce:

Special competitors badge for all competitors!:la:

Sign up and wear one!:eager:

We had a great time chatting with our participants, prize donors, judges and fellow writers yesterday. The month is approaching its end, and we have finally created and opened our contest folder for the poetry slam. Get those entries in as soon as you feel they are ready, but before the deadline at 11:59 PM CST May 31st, 2013. The gallery folder can be found here: [link]

Here's a rundown of what all we expect an entry to have and be when submitted:

:bulletblue: Entries must follow the theme of Self-Identity and must be work written for this contest.
:bulletblue: Entries must be literature deviations containing the text of the slam poem with a link to where the audio can be heard.
:bulletblue: The performance of the slam poem must be between 1-3 minutes. If it is longer or shorter we will ask you to modify the poem.
:bulletblue: Video submissions are accepted (via a link to youtube in the writer's comments of the literature deviation) provided that the video shows the poet performing their piece.
:bulletblue: No music, props, costumes on any audio or video entries. While singing is allowed, it's allowed only in moderation and to illustrate points. We will not tolerate entirely sung pieces.
:bulletblue: Prize donors are allowed to enter the poetry slam as well.
:bulletblue: Entries must follow deviantART's rules for submitting literature.

Good luck! We look forward to your submissions.

How Can You Help?

Anyone who offers a prize can still participate in the contest! :la: :note: =TheWritingDragon if you would like to offer a prize!  To help fund the contest, you can also donate to ~PFY-Donate with a message that it is specifically for this contest! :aww:

What Makes a Good Critique?

A good critique involves both what the artist did exceptionally well on with their art, and what they can improve on.  Critiques are not meant to be hurtful or rude, involving unnecessary comments that make the artist feel as though their art is bad.  CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM is the most important phrase you have to remember when you write your critique!!!  If the artist has no critique availability on their deviation, give a well thought out comment with at least 4 sentences.  Also, if they do not have a critique capability, include your rating of 1-5:star: of the following:
:bulletred:Vision
:bulletorange:Originality
:bulletyellow:Technique
:bulletgreen:Impact

That's all!  Please :note: =TheWritingDragon with any questions and remember to NOT COMMENT unless you're posting a link, as it can get confusing!!!

Genesis“Oh, excuse me. Let me get that for you.”

Carefully manoeuvring past the laden-down old woman in the doorway, I squeezed my way past her colourful patchwork trolley and into the café, holding the door open for her as I did so. She looked up at me in surprise, her eyes trained uncertainly on the flowing leather trench coat and painted black nails. But I smiled at her as warmly as possible and eventually, she realised that I wasn’t going to mug her like she had assumed, probably thinking of the many stereotyped ‘youths’ she had seen collecting on the street corners outside the off license. Smiling her thanks with

Where they slowly ground their hips and maintained eye contact, she was lost beneath a curtain a wild, untamed hair; her rage and passion overtaking everything until there was only the music in her soul to guide her. Where others batted their eyelids and giggled, she was matching the men on the boxing machine – even beating some. They spat out their drinks in surprise, caught somewhere between admi

They were happy. Every day was spent in a bubble, the impenetrable glowing surface sealing their happiness away from the contaminants of reality. They had nothing in common, were nothing alike. But that didn’t matter. Every day was spent as if in sunshine; their eyes only for one another. They were innocent then – we all were.

The Slug TrailMonday mornings are always awful. She looks out of her window and all she can see is rain. The sky is like a wound that will not convalesce, pouring all of its misfortunes down on the world to bear. Spring has been late to arrive; the clouds are heavy and thick, suffocating. The cup of coffee on the kitchen counter is steaming, and as she sips, it is scorching. Semi-contented from the self-inflicted stinging pain on her tongue, she looks at the raindrops on the glass window; they are little magnifying glasses.
The kitchen sink is full to the brim with dishes, and a slight aroma of decomposition lingers heavily. As she lights a cigarette the smoke twirls upwards perfectly, and stalely rests in the still air.
Mondays are always awful, but even more so when there is no reason to get out of bed, out of the front door. And then the days turn into weeks, and weeks into months, and by mid-spring she is still in the same fetal position under the covers. Her flowing brown hair is now tied in kn

Existential crisesThere was an odd feeling that washed over her on Saturday mornings. She sat dazed between unfinished paintings, white canvases with specks of reality, and piles of unorganized papers; they seemed to magically grow and multiply as if by an imaginary stroke of the hand. Some were bills she always forgot to pay, or letters from Dylan that always ended up, with the envelope still tightly shut, in the trash. You can read a person's personality, right to its gritty core, simply by examning their trash. She had Ding-Dong wrappers, ice-cream containers, sketches of people and people that were no-longer, and a rotting carton of orange juice with a lon SubliminalShe used to place a little pendant on her lapel. It was black and shaped like a perfect little circle. And if you looked close enough, until your eyes would sting and water up with salty tears of strained emotion, then maybe you could see the future; maybe not, though, because no one ever bothered asking. On the rainiest days of mid-December she would walk in swerves and swirls of restrained acquaintance, keeping me at an arm’s length, dreaming of brush-stroked kisses and nights that past one too many tequila-shots ago. Perhaps it will all change, but the pendant never turned white like God promised. And the omnipresent, generalized idea

Whispers in the Wind
We ran through space once, chasing wreaths of fire
Through Heaven, through Hell, through laughter and ire;
Waltzed with the gods that were our own imaginations-
Brought down worlds and rose others through creation.

We both tried to solve the world's nonsensical equations
And lifted up the groundwork of all the past nations;
Grabbed the Apple, split the fruit, took a bite out of two,
And scoffed at everything under the sky’s azure blue.

But somewhere along the way, the mathematics fell apart,
The schematics of the world tore out its beating heart
Into the hands of Fate, who turned aside our eyes
And lifted iridescence; away did it fly.

Thus we came to rebehold the stars
And the other globes of the celestial skies,

And the mechanics of the world turn counter clockwise,
They pushed on by the mortals who plot God's demise…

But you, my dear Ophelia, what do you see?
Do you envision your ghosts with those sightless eyes?
Or do you see anger, bitter desperation, hate?
The river as my arms that you refused to take?

And gave me empty promises that still set me alight-

All set to rot when spent the last of the eve-

I was immensely impressed with the turn out for this contest! The entries we saw were deep, beautiful pieces that spoke with undeniable truth and made us (the judges and readers) think in so many more ways than we ever could have on our own! I think the prompt was a good one, but what you guys did with it was amazing and an immense pleasure to read! They sparked conversation between deviants and (undoubtedly) touched many people! So first and foremost, I’d like to say a big thank you to those who entered! Thank you for weaving your words into our lives and sharing your hearts with us:aww:

Thank you also to our donors who contributed the prizes to this contest! I will be sending a :note: to all the donors, so PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THEM! Winners, I will also be contacting you with the final list of your prizes so that you have some time to think over what you want to order for your commissions and such:D

Thanks also to everyone else who entered and contributed to this contest! Please take a moment to wish the winners congratulations and check out their winning pieces and their individual galleries!

Remember, keep inspiring and keep writing!!

So I've decided to hold this contest in relation to my new ask blog "Project Rising" -> [link]. Here's the rules, summary and prizes!

So, imagine your character's town of Relic was taken over by a secret society where they let nobody in or out. The rules are strict and they want nothing but to get out. Draw your character or design a character in the style of a modern day revolutionist. Someone that screams rebellion. Let the world know they are not with The System.

:star:RULES:star:
