PE: Anthro Art Tutorials

Thu Jan 26, 2012, 3:11 PM

On today's Project Educate Article on Anthro, I'll be highlighting some great tutorials on how to draw Anthro. Sense there is no right or wrong as far as drawing Anthro, because lets face it, we don't see a werewolf running around to reference from, your imagination is the limit. However, there are some simply guidelines that you can take home with you and practice to better your creativity.

Anatomy

This is probably one of the most challenging things for people to adhere to. Anatomy in itself is a little challenging but once you get it, the sky's the limit as far as drawing Anthropomorphic animals, beings and things!

So below are a few pointers!

    1. The Ultimate Anthro Tutorial - This tutorial was created for all beginners and Art enthusiasts around the world. It has such detail and walks you through all the basics before getting to the next level where you feel comfortable drawing anatomy for an Anthro character.
    2. Movement & Flexibility - Often taken with a grain of salt is movement. Its always a good idea to have your pose laid out. Some of those involve some serious movement, especially for 'action' scenes or concepts. This is a great tutorial that shows you the important things to consider when drawing movements
    3. Pose Maniacs - One of the best websites that provides a huge resource for poses of all kinds!

Textures:

Here are a few website(s) that contain some great, free textures for you to use!

Cross Referencing

What does this mean? Well sense there is nothing to go off of in the real world as far as drawing something "Anthro" we have to cross reference it from something that does. For example, you want to draw an anthropomorphized cat.  You will have to use references of cats gathered from various sources (usually online) and compare the features from the cat to the person. So you are taking the characteristics, features and traits of that animal and applying it to a human, object or thing.

Here is a great tutorial on cross-referencing!

A common topic among the anthro community (and heck, DeviantArt at large) is the classification of what is anthro, what is furry, and what isn't. Heck, even well-established artists have a hard time explaining it, and to quote Scott Kurtz of PvP: "Cartoon animals don't have boobs!"

An often-offered definition of the difference between Anthro and Furry is that Furry is a sexualized form of Anthro, whereas Anthro is simply drawing animals acting like humans and sipping tea; ergo, Anthro is the 'true' art and standard of civilization, while Furry is its mentally retarded drooly cousin, mostly consisting of cub porn and recolored Sonic OC's.

This is the most widely accepted definition between Furry and Anthro. It's also dead wrong.

To help demonstrate this, I've made up a simple graph to make it clear what 'Anthro' is and what Furry isn't:

A brief explanation of the relevant bits so I'm not just repeating what's already written on the chart's deviation page:

Anthro covers every possible thing you could turn into a humanoid.
Anthro Machines are Droids.
Anthro Plants are Treants.
Anthro Animals are Furries.
Anthro anything else is . . . whatever you want to call it, it's not really important which.

In case you didn't notice it when you first saw the chart, the style, the context, and the genre are completely and utterly irrelevant. There is no delineation or special terminology given to obscene materials in that chart, or for cartoon characters, or for realistic representations of these concepts. There's a good reason for that.

If you are drawing ANY representation of an animal given human traits, it's Furry. It can be Mickey Mouse, It can be Sonic, it can be Hepcats fanart, it can be that Aflac duck . . . I don't care how sexualized or innocent, how cartoony or realistic, how crude or refined, if you are drawing animals doing things that you don't see animals doing in real life, it's Furry.

Attempting to classify yourself as Anthro when you're drawing Furry is deception at best and arrogance at worst — deception because while all furry is anthro, not all anthro is furry, and arrogance because it furthers this idea that drawing animals is okay only as long as it's within socially acceptable boundaries and you're not doing anything crazy like pretending you were a dragon or giving your catgirl the build of a college coed.

Yes, there are seedy elements of Furry, just like there are artistic nudes on DeviantArt. There is drawn pornography (commonly termed 'Yiff') in Furry, just like there's Hentai in Anime. There are plenty of Furry archives that will push these limits, just like there's other art archives out there that will post all the other stuff DeviantArt doesn't allow. There is no excuse for claiming all Furry is Yiff, just like there is no excuse for claiming all Anime is Hentai. (For those who have short memories, the Anime/Manga/Hentai connection was a common mistake in the 90's, but this too has died down thanks to the mainstreaming of Anime and Manga.)

Unless your animal characters are little plush toys, art sculptures, or some other series of inanimate objects that have somehow come to life, you are dealing in Furry  — and if said items have any human traits whatsoever, they're still Furry. The sooner we all accept this fact and stop treating the term 'Furry' like it only applies to the kinky fetish side of Anthro . . .

. . . the sooner we can get the rest of the internet to cut us some slack.
Too many people has the wrong idea about what does "Anthro" mean...  even before deviantART created a whole gallery devoted to this special kind of art, there are still too many doubts about this category, and maybe that explains many of the mistakes when uploading pictures, images or drawings to our section.

Even when I was still not the Anthro Gallery Director , I tried to explain this concept in a journal entry but couldn't manage to make it clear, and now I think it's the perfect chance for a new attempt. ^___^ To start with, let's take a look at two definitions that may help us.

  1. ...from Wikipedia:

Anthro: a synonym for anthropomorphism in the furry fandom.

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of uniquely human characteristics and qualities to nonhuman beings, inanimate objects, or natural or supernatural phenomena (...)
Anthro Art and may be any fictional work that employs the concept of animal characters with human characteristics. For this reason, any work, in any medium, may be considered part of the anthropomorphic genre simply by inclusion of a fantastic animal character, although such characters are most often seen in comics, cartoons, animated films, allegorical novels, and video games. The science fiction and fantasy genres make frequent use of anthropomorphism, and as a result, are especially popular in furry fandom. Since the 1980s, the term furries has come to refer to anthropomorphic animal characters.

  2. ...from WikiFur:

Anthropomorphic is a word meaning "like a human." It is used to describe a well-known concept called anthropomorphism: ascribing human characteristics to a non-human being or object. (...) the word can apply to any non-human thing, including animals, plants, and inanimate objects.

Since the 1980s, the furry fandom has used the word to refer primarily to bipedal animals. Anthropomorphic animals are sometimes called anthro or morphic for short, and art featuring furry characters is sometimes called anthro art. This is somewhat ironic, as anthro ultimately derives from the Greek anthropos, a word that means "human being."

...And, to enlighten you a bit, here you have examples of the most common mistakes ;)

  • :bulletblue: Dragons, as any other kind of Mythical Creature, like for example Mermaids, Unicorns, Bigfoot, Chupacabras or Loch Ness Monsters, are not "Anthro", so they should be uploaded to Fantasy.

  • :bulletblue: Boys or girls with cat ears or tails, are humans with animal features, but NOT animals with human features.... so they are not Anthro, and should be uploaded to the right gallery, for example Manga/Anime if they fit that japanese drawing style.

  • :bulletblue: Believe it or not, there are still miscategorized deviations because drawings featuring people, are submitted to Anthro in the (wrong) belief that "Anthro" means "Human"... if you have read this News Article down to this point, then you can realize they are 100% mistaken

...So I hope this little report has helped you to understand a bit more the purpose Anthro Gallery has in deviantART. I can understand there are not only black and white but a whole range of possibilities, and sometimes the difference between "Animal" and "Anthro", or related to "Fantasy", is a thin red line, but as a general view, the previous definitions are the regulations currently in force, even if that doesn't mean they can't change.... We're flexible, after all, and any kind of feedback is always more than welcome
:postit: What is Anthro?
There has been much discussion of late as to what is anthro, what is fantasy, and what is animal. `skifi recently released an article attempting to explain this hairy situation. I recommend all of you read both his article and mine. We want to help you understand the anthro category - and in turn help the anthro community with fewer mis-categorizations and more accurate Daily Deviation Award suggestions.

:postit: Dictionary Definition
Anthropomorphism (aka "anthro"): Attribution of human motivation, characteristics, or behavior to inanimate objects, animals, plants, or natural phenomena. (Dictionary.com)

:postit: Key Things to Look for in Anthros
:bulletred: Bipedal anatomy (walks upright on two legs)
:bulletred: Opposable thumbs (though not required)
:bulletred: Partakes in human activities and would likely wear human-like clothing.

:postit: Please Note
:bulletred: Mythical creatures like mermaids and centaurs are fantasy.
:bulletred: Werewolves and minotaurs are also mythical creatures, therefore classified as fantasy, but are also considered anthro b/c they meet the key features of an anthro character, as listed above.
:bulletred: Totems such as trickster spirits based on animals with human anatomy are anthro. However, animals with the ability to turn human are fantasy.
:bulletred: Dragons are considered fantasy, but bipedal dragons that wear clothes or sport other aforementioned key features can qualify as anthro. This is a gray area at best.

:postit: ANIMAL ANTHROS

:bulletred: Canines
While werewolves were considered "fantasy creatures" before the term "anthro" was birthed, werewolves fulfill all the requirements of an anthro, and are therefore classified as such.

ANTHRO:
Note: The clothing, opposable thumbs, and bipedal build are elements of an anthro character.

FANTASY:
Note: This creature is not based on any one realistic animal, it also harnesses magic.

ANIMAL: :thumb65987431:
Note: Quadrupedal build, and despite being colored in a fantasy-fashion, it is based on the basic anatomy of a dog.

FAN-ART:
Note: Not only is this a quadrupedal character, it is also fan-art.

:bulletred: Avians

ANTHRO: :thumb43288373:
Note: This character possesses opposable thumbs and though a hybrid of pelican and oviraptor, both of these are animals that once existed.

FANTASY: :thumb55354622:
Note: This is a popular, quadrupedal creature - the gryphon.

ANIMAL:
Note: Birds are naturally bipedal, so that does not automatically qualify them as anthros.

FAN-ART:
Note: Although this is anthro, it is of an established, copyrighted character, therefore qualifying it as fan-art.

:bulletred: Felines
ANTHRO: :thumb46734552:
Note: This is a portrait of an anthro cat, due to her upright position and breasts.

FANTASY:
Note: This cat features magic qualities, which qualify as fantasy.

ANIMAL:

FAN-ART: ::thumb2567920:
Note: This is an anthro image of an anthro Disney character, which qualifies as fan-art.

ANIME:
Note: This is anime, she is not anthro just because she is a human with cat ears and a tail.

:bulletred:Dragons/Hybrids

ANTHRO:
Note: This anthro character is based on three different animals - raptor, eagle, and sytracosaur - which is still considered anthro.

FANTASY:
Note: This character is a dragon, he is no based on any animal(s). He can qualify as fantasy or anthro.

FAN-ART:
Note: Though this character features elements of an anthro, he is fan-art b/c he is based on a famous movie character.

:postit: UNUSUAL ANTHROS

:bulletred: PLANTS:
Note: Plant anthros can be difficult b/c they rarely possess opposable thumbs or defined legs. This category is highly ambiguous.

:bulletred: OBJECTS:
Note: Again, this is an ambiguous category.

:bulletred: NATURAL PHENOMENA:
Note: This category is so confusing that it hardly matters whether it falls under anthro or fantasy.

:postit: FAMOUS ANTHROS

As always, there are exceptions to these definitions. These are guidelines to better help you understand what anthro is, not rigid rules you must abide by to create anthro art. Thanks for reading.

What Is Anthro Challenge?

Our Group: #anthrochallenge

This is a challenge built for the community, by the community. Visitors of the IamAnthro Chat-Room  (the official chat-room of the anthro gallery), came up with the idea. It aims to offer the community spesific challanges each month to test their artistic skills against. These challenges range from a simple word like COLD or go more in depth and detail about what your challenge is.

The point of Anthro Challenge is to push artists outside their comfort zone. To think outside the box. We sometimes, as artists, get stuck on a particular topic. Maybe it's because it is popular or maybe it's just because it is your favorite subject. Regardless, our job is to offer a challenge to you and see how far you can take it!

THE INTRO:

'Anthro – a synonym for anthropomorphism in the furry fandom'

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of uniquely human characteristics and qualities to nonhuman beings, inanimate objects, or natural or supernatural phenomena. Anthropomorphic is a word meaning "like a human." It is used to describe a well-known concept called anthropomorphism: ascribing human characteristics to a non-human being or object. (...) the word can apply to any non-human thing, including animals, plants, and inanimate objects.

 ~from Wikipedia and Wikifur~

As many of you know, there is a persistent cliché that anthro only means animals with human features, but the term, as you just read, includes not only animals but all kinds of vegetables, objects, and items, from your garden cactus to your toothbrush, as long as they are drawn with human-like characteristics, including:
  • Walk upright

  • Human features

  • The bone structure of a human, with some of its animal/vegetable/item counterpart (i.e. a cat-anthro that although looks like a human, can jump like a cat).

We can see animal-based anthros in our galleries everyday, but it's quite uncommon to find non-animal anthropomorphic creatures. So, for this contest, the goal is to prove that the stereotype is not always true. So be creative and show us what you can do creating your own NON-ANIMAL anthro. ;)

Good examples are:

:thumb37714828:

The Concept

:star: Two weeks ago, I asked you to help me choose the most awesome Anthro Artist sharing their amazing art with us here in our beloved deviantART. This was not a contest, but an unusual way to let us all find some great artists we may be missing in our devwatch list. Many people gave me their votes, and around 300 Anthro Artists were mentioned in fact.

:star: So, a lot of deviants chose their ten favorite anthro artists uploading their pics here in deviantART. After two weeks, I got all the "votes" and created a list with the ones mentioned the most, to then set a special kind of feature for them all and share it later with you today. It doesn't pretend to be the "Top Ten" list, neither to score or rate the popularity of those artists, but to see what the Anthro Community (or, at least, the deviants replying to my request) feels you should not miss if you want to enjoy anthropomorphic art here!!

:star: Do you not like the idea of mentioning famous deviants here? Do you think they don't need them at all? Well, the same than we feature unknown or not-too-famous artists with the FAA or the DDs, the already popular deviants also deserve a chance to be in the spotlight, don't you think? And maybe you didn't even know about some of those! Also, if you think there were better artists that should have been mentioned instead, don't complain if you didn't vote or told me your choices ;3

Do you want to check the list now? :icongrin--plz: Here you have the most voted artists!

I wouldn't consider myself a pro at making Fan characters No really, I'm far from it...</b> but many deviants have commented my work and put down their own characters. So, here are some guides and tips on making a fan character, in some tips labelled below.

> 'Recolours' - We all started the same!
> Thinking of back story and personality
> Species and powers
> Name
> Anything else.

'Recolours'
'Why don't people like Recolours :?'
Though not really respected here on DA because of a lack of effort. Though some people may think they have put tonnes of effort into a character, others think there's more to be done. But even then, many deviants haven't taken into account that we all started the same. My first ever character was a green Shadow named Reflecto. But it's not too late to change it! Just take a pencil and paper and read on for tips to improve.

Backstory and personality
What must I avoid, if anything :?
Avoid making your storyline anything to do with the OC's. Some cases, Brothers and Sisters or Relatives are acceptable, but if your character's species is nothing to do with the character (For example Sonic the Hedgehog having a Cat sister) then it doesn't really look right.
Don't make your character's storyline too much like an OC's. Everyone loves to read something new, so if you think deeply about it you might just get the bull’s eye on what people like.
What kind of personality should my character have :?
It's totally up to you. This is your character, so it's entirely yours to construct. You can make it just like you, or the total opposite!

Species and Powers
What should I avoid, if anything :?
Species isn't really a big deal, but I find the best characters are a species that Sonic Team hasn't covered. Explore Wikipedia, Google, or other search engines for an animal you like, you might be surprised what you can find.
What about powers :?
In the Sonic Universe, Sonic is the fastest thing alive. So if your character is a resident in Sonic's world, being faster then him would contradict his reputation. On the other hand, say your character is from another world (Blaze's dimension, far past or future, Twilight Cage etc) These powers would be acceptable.
Powers like Pyrokenisis, Telekinesis, are often based upon Backstory, or species. For example, Blizzard the Penguin can swim with great speeds. Tide the Turtle can control limited amounts of water. Best results are always related to the species.
Does my character HAVE to have powers :?
No. Some characters are totally amazing without powers, but may look not so good with them. Instead of powers, you may want to equip your character with a basic weapon, such as a gun, staff, wrench etc.
Can I make up a species, like an alien or something :?
Totally! If you've already come up with a design but can't class it as anything, make it up! Help for naming your species is below too.

Name
Names are just as hard to think of as the character itself sometimes. I usually base mine on the character's species or powers or personality, like Blizzard the Penguin and Sail the Spinosaur. If you have a name which you're not too keen on, translate it into a different language. Such as Green the lizard >>> Vert the Lizard. It's that simple!
Species names, look at your character. What's the first animal (If any) that comes into your mind when you look at it? And the second? You can pair the names of these animals together to make your own species, or mix and match with translators. Like dog cat >>>> Catog >>>> Nechat. French and Russian spellings there.

Anything else?
Remember, I’m not wanting to make your character for you. You can choose to take these tips or ignore them. Your fandom, your way! But if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to comment. I’ll get around to responding as soon as I can.

So, there’s my handy tips on making Sonic fan characters! =) Thank you for reading!

The Weird Idea

:star: This same week, I published a news article featuring ten amazing artists our Anthro Community chose to set a "Must See" list. This was not a contest, but an unusual way to let us all find some great artists we may be missing in our devwatch list. Many people gave me their votes, and around 300 Anthro Artists were mentioned in fact.

:star: This first list was created with the most suggested deviants. It didn't pretend to be the "Top Ten" list, neither to score or rate the popularity of those artists, but to see what the Anthro Community (or, at least, the deviants replying to my request) felt you should not miss if you want to enjoy anthropomorphic art here here in deviantART.

:star: However, I wanted to also create an alternative list, a "Should See" featuring ten artists I got to find using the previous suggestions. Maybe they're still not famous, maybe their art is still not watched by more than 10-20 people, but for sure it's worth to be checked, and I thought it was my responsibility to get them in the spotlight too. Give them the chance, check their galleries, and you will agree with me, it will for sure be worth your time

Because favourites, popularity, pageviews or watchers was never a perfect way to meassure artistic talent

The Best of the Best: The Anthro-Alliance's Guide to DA's Anthro Artists!
--------------------------------------------------------------------

I admit it -- I'm a "Featured Artist" nut.  There's nothing I love more than browsing the galleries at DA and picking out the anthro gems.  Except pie.  I love pie more.

But instead of just hiding these in my Favorites Section, the #Anthro-Alliance will be putting out weekly issues of the AA's Guide, complete with interviews in future issues.  For now I'll kick things off with a bang by featuring some of the hotest Anthro artists out there.  Some are well-known for what they do, while some are really not visited as much as they should be.

Because this is a general publication I've kept all the features clean and in good taste.

---------------------

Future issues will mostly include artists who aren't that well known -- and while we actively hunt for them in the Anthro Gallery, you can suggest them to us!  Here are the rules for suggesting an #Anthro-Alliance news article feature:

1.) Please do not suggest yourself.  I don't want hurt feelings if you're not chosen.

2.) Up to 5 suggestions per note -- only one note per week please.

3.) Title your suggestions New Article Feature Suggestion.  Please only send the note to the club.

4.) Include a link to the piece.

5.) Tell me why you're suggesting each picture.

6.) If your suggestion isn't featured, please no nasty notes.

7.) I prefer artists who aren't OMG famous -- while I will take suggestions for the pieces, I will be trying to feature artists who actually need the exposure.

Well that'll be all for this week!  Tune in same time next week for more great Anthro Gallery art!
