PE: Fur Tutorials and Resources

Thu May 23, 2013, 8:01 AM

Fur Tutorials & Resources

I did a previous article on some awesome resources as far as Anthro art is concerned but I wanted to highlight some awesome tutorials, brushes and resources that have sprout up sense then!

DeviantART has such a wide variety of resources available to all beginning, improving, and skilled artists alike! We never stop learning and being able to provide some of those resources I hope will help you as they've helped me!

Some of the more 'daunting' tasks with Anthro art is anatomy but I get a lot of questions about fur and how to draw it or paint it in. This includes direction of fur, direction of strokes, what brushes to use, what stock to use, etc! It's nearly limitless!

So without further adue, here are some great resources that I hope you will find helpful to you!

Questions to the community

1. What is most probalamatic for you in respects to anatomy?

2. What type of tutorial would you like to see?

3. What type of tutorial is ,ost helpful to you? Video? Photo step by step?

Anatomy Help

Fur Brushes & Tutorials

Here is a great list of some awesome resources in regards to fur brushes. There's nothing wrong with using brushes to help you along in your digital art experience but make sure to not 100% rely on them. Though they are an amazing tool, try and use them for a base and then work your way around with details, stroke motions and get a good feel for how the fur should be!

Free Lineart

Practice makes perfect and you can utilize your skills and practice them on some free line art provided by some extremely talented and gracious artists on DeviantART! Make sure to follow their guidelines when using their free line art (like credit if you upload!)

ANTHRO ART FEATURE VOL 1

The Anthro Gallery Presents

Featuring Great Artists Vol 1

White Solitude
by `balaa
Arctic werewolves live in significantly colder climates, often in the arctic circle. They spend more of their time in beast form than other werewolves, to make optimal use of their fur. They have thicker fur and bodies, and shorter ears. They can afford to be near or even in their homes this way because of the sparse population in the area.

Nerdy Owl
by *vincenthachen
This piece has such a bright, youthful feel to it that sucks you right in! It brings the right amount of sophistication to this owl!  Fantastic highlights, details and great use of color!

Felis Princess
by ~mansarali
Has such a beautiful contrast between detail and use of lighting. From the soft lips to the gentle fall of golden gilded hair you can't help but admire this piece for what it is. Beautiful!

Four Eyed Snail
by *MoaWallin

Is such a fun and unique piece of Anthro art you can't help but admire this little guy! The details are great and really pull this piece together and the use of the color scheme in this makes the main character pop. Love it!

What IS Anthropomorphic Art?

What is Anthropomorphic Art?

Anthropomorphism or personification is any attribution of human characteristics (or characteristics assumed to belong only to humans) to other animals, non-living things, phenomena, material states, objects or abstract concepts, such as organizations, governments, spirits or deities. The term was coined in the mid-1700s. Examples include animals and plants and forces of nature such as winds, rain or the sun depicted as creatures with human motivations, and/or the abilities to reason and converse. The term derives from the combination of the Greek ἄνθρωπος (ánthrōpos), "human" and μορφή (morphē), "shape" or "form".

As a literary device, anthropomorphism is strongly associated with art and storytelling where it has ancient roots. Most cultures possess a long-standing fable tradition with anthropomorphised animals as characters that can stand as commonly recognised types of human behavior. In contrast to this, conventional Western science, as well as such religious doctrines as the Christian Great Chain of Being propound the opposite, anthropocentric belief that animals, plants and non-living things, unlike humans, lack spiritual and mental attributes, immortal souls, and anything other than relatively limited awareness.

Q&A with ^KovoWolf

Here are a few questions & answers in regards to Anthro art! I've come across these questions quiet a bit so I thought I would answer them here as well! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Q: What is Anthropomorphic art?

^KovoWolf - Anthropomorphic is pronounced [an-thruh-puh-mawr-fik]
adjective
1. ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human, especially to a deity.
2.resembling or made to resemble a human form: an anthropomorphic carving.

So by definition it states giving human characteristics to an otherwise none human object, animal or thing. For example Disney's - The Brave Little Toaster, Van Helsings WereWolf, The Creature From The Black Lagoon! or Anubis, an Egyptian God. All of these are things, objects or creatures that exhibit human traits or characteristics.

Is there somewhere I can go to chat amongst fellow Anthro art enthusiasts?

^KovoWolf - Yes! There are a few different chat channels you can join using the dAmn chat network! Some channels are:

#IamAnthro - is the official, Anthro Community-sponsored chatroom managed by Team Anthro staff.
#AnthroConvention - is a brand new channel on dAmn for con-goers and the curious alike to share ideas, network, and talk about anything and everything convention related. This room offers an open art share, open critique and links to fabulous resources on the web. Most importantly, the Anthro Community now has an awesome tool to use for getting live tips and advice from fursuiters and fursuit makers on every aspect of costume design and construction like no other place.

Do I have to be an Anthro artist in order to be involved with the Anthro Community?

^KovoWolf - Nope! The Anthro Community welcomes any and all individuals who share the same love and devotion to art! Anthropomorphism is another form of art and the community is more then happy to share that with fellow artists of all genre!

PE: Anthro - Genre, Anthro vs Furry and AdviceAnthro Art - Different Genres - Anthro vs Furry

The unique thing about Anthro art is that it can take different shapes, sizes, and forms. The only limitation is your imagination. One of the most common misconceptions for Anthro art is that people generally associate it with "Furry" art because most of Anthro art is enveloped around furry animals that look like humans ( Below the very talented ^Katmomma has written up a quick guide to the differences between "Furry" and "Anthro"). Lions, Tigers, Bears and WereWolves. But contrary to popular belief, Anthro art can range from animals to toasters that doesn't involve fur at all! In my previous post about Anthro art, I explained what Anthropomorphic was. Anthro art is based on the very definition below:
Anthropomorphic: Ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human, especially to a deity.
There is no "right" or "wrong" way to draw or portray Anthro art because like fantasy art, they do
PE: Anthro Artists - Exposure In the Real WorldDeviantART is a host of a wide variety of resources. One of those resources is being able to showcase your work to a huge audience and with that comes the hope and chance to get noticed for things outside of DeviantART. For example like art shows, books, comics etc. This that have been published in the real world.
In this article we will be exposing some Anthro artists here on DeviantART who have become published or are working on being published. To give them a chance in the spotlight and showcase their hard work and dedication to what they love.

Sense there is no right or wrong as far as drawing Anthro, because lets face it, we don't see a werewolf running around to reference from, your imagination is the limit. However, there are some simply guidelines that you can take home with you and practice to better your creativity.
Anatomy
This is probably one of the most challenging things for people to adhere to. Anatomy in itself is a little challenging but once you get it, the sky's the limit as far as drawing Anthropomorphic animals, beings and things!

Fursuits & Costumes

What are "fursuits" you ask? Fursuits are animal costumes made from various materials. They range from simple tails and ears to full costumes cooled by battery-powered fans. Fursuits can be worn for personal enjoyment, conventions, work or charity.

The standard fursuit is a full body costume that consists of a head, forepaws (hands), hindpaws (feet) and a body with an attached tail. In some cases, the tail is connected via a belt to the wearer and hangs out through a hole in the back of the body. Many suits include special padding or undersuits to give the character its desired shape (this is especially present in larger characters or those of a particular gender). Owners can spend less than one-hundred to many thousands of dollars on one fursuit, depending on complexity and materials used. More advanced fursuit features include jaws which move when the user speaks, and moving tails. Furry fans make their own using online tutorials or advice from newsgroups; the suits can also be purchased online or at conventions.

A partial suit or half-suit has all of the parts of the standard suit, with exception to the body. This allows the wearer to have different clothes over the paws, head and tail, such as another costume or street clothes. In partial suits, the tail is usually attached to a belt, and the arms and legs have sleeves that can go up as far as the shoulders and pelvis, respectively.

Most recently, a third type known as the three-quarter suit has been developed, which consists of a head, arms and pants made to look like the legs, tail and feet of a specific animal, or a torso in place of legs. This type of fursuit works well for characters who only wear a shirt without pants or just a pair of pants without a shirt.

Why wear a Fursuit?

People who wear fursuits are sometimes referred to as "Furries", however, you do not have to wear a fursuit to be considered a "furry". People who own fursuits enjoy wearing them for parades, exhibitions, conventions and informal meetings or just for fun! They can be from the very basic tail and ears to the very complex costumes! Regardless, there really are some amazing works of art out there and some beautiful, intricate costumes. A form of art all together and one that I hope you find and appreciate!

Anthropomorphic Art In Literature

An often widely over looked section from the Anthro Gallery, the literature community holds a great array of fantastic stories! So without further adue, here are some great literature features from the Anthro community!

Have another piece of anthro literature to share? Please share and post your links here! I would love to feature them!

Anthropomorphic Fursuits - Quadsuits

As a request from the community I would love to include a feature of Quadsuits that weren't included in my previous article in regards to fursuits. So what is a Quadsuit? A quad suit, quadsuit or quad costume is a fursuit that utilizes the wearer's arms as forelegs which assume the position of a quadruped character's own forelegs on the same ground or surface as the character's hindlegs. Such suits, which are less common than biped fursuits, are used in order to further impress individuals with a more "animalistic" (hence, realistic) pose and manner of movement.

I've realized I dont hae many friends on here that I can create collab art or send gift art too! If you have a furry and would like to befriend me, please do! Id love to make art with you and learn or teach some new techniques in drawing or chat with you guys. okthxbai Cx

Well, my most recent picture I posted not too long ago of Krocial.  It's... Well... Struggling. BIG TIME. I remember back when a Krocial picture used to get like up to like at least 56 faves and 100s of views in just 33 minutes. Now. Krocial's struggling to push over 15 faves, and at least 70 views. What's wrong people? Why ain't you guys showing Krocial any love anymore? Is she "played out" or something? Is everyone moving on to the next big thing?

I mean Krocial really wants to put on a show. And well. The pride is pretty much broken. I'm confused. What's going on? Is Shamon and Mary Ann the next big things? (Yeah. I've noticed Mary Ann's getting quit popular as well.) Because Krocial's married now? Or what? Come on guys? I need to know.
