Quilling!

I was looking through a bunch of my old favourites when I decided to write my New Years Resolution when I came across something known as quilling. According to the almighty Wikipedia:
Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork.

I couldn't help but notice that quilling isn't a defined category you can select when you're selecting categories available on DA. Arguably, it does fit under the broad Folding & Papercraft category, although considering the amount of quilling work on DA I can't help but think making a gallery under quilling would help define it as a true art form on DA and encourage others to try out this medium. What are your thoughts?

Pick up your pen, pencils, markers, quills, and/or keyboards ladies and gentlemen, it's contest time. I hope. I mean, really, it'll be loads of fun guys. Unlike the screaming that is emitting from the show my family is watching right now. That's not fun.

So, here's how this contest is going to work out. I'm going to pick from a hat one of our folders, and, that'll happen as soon as I find paper that doesn't have a part of my book on it... *wanders off for a while* FOUND ONE!! *pops out of stack of papers*

So, just as a refresher, our folders are as follows:

The category Short Stories will be used as the basis. Every entry will be a short story.

Rules:

Everything goes!!! I don't care if it's got mature on mature on mature. If you want to write that, go right ahead! But if someone is insulted, I'm not getting you out of that. I will not be that kind admin. And yes, you may submit old works!

Try to keep it a good length. Not too short, but please don't write a twelve page essay. I'd die if I had to read that. There's no word limit.

HAVE FUN. I think this is the most important rule. If you're not going to have fun, then don't do it. I can always find some other use for you.

You have to be a member (or a member of an affiliate) to join this contest, so please join us, writers!

Please submit entries to the SCIFI CONTEST folder, NOT THE SCIENCE FICTION OR ANY OTHER FOLDER! If it is not in the specified folder, your entry will not count!

Deadline is 11:59pm EST, November 16th.

Chemo *Update*☆ Happenings ☆

After twelve years of going without it, my grandmother will finally start chemotherapy on Monday. She's raised me since I was a baby and my mum isn't in the picture, so she essentially is my mother. I'm really having a hard time accepting some of the less pleasant possibilities that come with this. Her mortality is something I've always mentally known but never been able to emotionally accept, and seeing her so weak all the time is doing bad things to me.
About three years ago, our neighbor and friend was being treated for leukemia and died from a lung infection he got after a bone marrow transplant that wiped out his immune system, and that's been on my mind a lot as well.
Hopefully it will go well. She has a brother with waldenstroms (it's genetic) who's had these same treatments twice and responded well to them, so I'm trying to focus on that and remain hopeful, but I'm still very scared. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to he

Quill Horse Import Winners

Okay so some of you may have noticed I put up a poll awhile back asking who exactly wanted to OWN a quill horse. Well I'm dying to make some art (plus I wanted that other journal to go away >_>) and decided to pick some winners! Please know that this isn't the only chance to get on, I will from time to time put up raffles again and poll to see who wants them so don't fret!

For now though I'm just picking two people out of those who responded and how I'll be going about this is going to be really very fun I think! Hopefully you do too!

Before I explain though I'm going to announce the two winners. They are..... -drumroll-

Congrats to you both! RMS is trusting you now to treat our new breed with great care and respect now.

So now that you know who you are, this is where the fun part comes in!

RMS has a limited stock of Horse Genetics and these are crutical to creating your Quill horse since a normal horses genome is combined with that of a raptor. Because of this we are offering you two options.

1. (The fun one) You offer us a DNA sample from one of your already existing horses! This will mean your quill will in some way be related to this horse but is in no way a clone. We still don't suggest you breed the donating horse to the quill but it will be safe to breed with other horses and certain other breeds.
This can be any horse you have (to a point, more below

) natural or unnatural! We're not sure what effect an unnaturally colored horse will have but we're excited to find out!

2. Option 2 is that you can just let us pull from our stock of Horse genetics to make your quill. Note that we don't have any of the rare colors however and all the coats will be solid.

We suspect that certain breeds of equine will not successfully fuse to make a quill. Examples would be breeds that have severely diverse physical adaptions like that of the SkullEquine or Dragon Horses. Because of this we ask that you only donate DNA from horses that are simply different by coat color like a Harlequine or Hallowequine. (Or simply something unnaturally colored)
