Voilà! Paris deviantMEET Wrap-Up!

Mon Jun 11, 2012, 7:45 AM

:target: Bonjour deviants!

This past weekend, deviantART teamed up with #DeviantMEET-Paris to host a deviantMEET that ultimately yielded over 250 deviant attendees!  As you may have read in the latest Site Update, our Devious Technology, Product, and Product Marketing teams are currently in France -- participating in a staff retreat, that has everyone working hard to improve and optimize many key areas of deviantART.  On Saturday, June 9th, we took a small break from our discussions and traveled to the City of Light to meet and mingle with Parisian deviants.  Here's a quick recap of the day's events!

We met at Mécano Bar, where we were welcomed by early arriving attendees and current/former Community Volunteers -- including ^anmari, and `Anoya, $namenotrequired and `fritsvandersloot, who traveled all the way from The Netherlands!

We also met with ^SaTaNiA and =ZeldaDreams, who are key organizers of #DeviantMEET-Paris, and were instrumental in making this meet a success. Thanks to their amazing planning and French-to-English translation skills, we were able to host a truly devious party.

After setting out sketchbooks and markers, deviants quickly began filling the pages with deviously colorful drawings.

Sketching activities became so intense that a drawing battle broke out between ~Na-ushica, ~Spacesam, *JR-T, and *choptider. It was a tough fight, but the result is nothing less than amazing!

As the day rolled on, the Mécano Bar became packed to the brim with deviants! Photos were taken, sketchbooks were proudly exhibited, usernames exchanged, and new friends acquired. Not to mention, all deviants in attendance received a deviantART lanyard and a handful of stickers!  Extra lucky deviants even went home with a Fella or Llama plushie!

While talking with attendees about all things deviantART, we received a lot of great feedback about what you like and what can be improved on deviantART. Many of our developers were able to hear comments and suggestions firsthand about the features they helped build. We even showed off some brand new features! :eyes:

Despite photobombing bus drivers and only having a small alley in which to take a group photo, *Yousry-Aref-Photos captured this incredible shot of just some of our attendees! Many of the photos from the deviantMEET came from *Yousry-Aref-Photos, so many thanks to him for being an excellent photographer.

:eager: Longing for more deviantMEETS?

If you live in the Paris area and want to participate in more deviantMEETS, be sure to check out and join the #DeviantMEET-Paris group! ^SaTaNiA and =ZeldaDreams are wonderful hosts who hold Paris deviantMEETS monthly.  You won't be disappointed!

:pencil: Your Journals

Having a hard time believing that so much fun was had?  Don't take our word for it.  Check out these journals by attendees to see what they had to say about the event!  (If you have written a journal about the meet or plan to in the near future, please let us know by commenting in this journal and we'll make sure you get added to the list.)

If you have any deviations from the event that you would like to share, please add them to this Favorites folder in the #DeviantMEET-Paris group!

:sherlock: Until next time!

Merci beaucoup to everyone who attended! We had a fantastic time and can't wait for our next European meet. In fact, there may be one in the near future.

Join us in Paris, France!

Parisian deviants! We're headed for the beautiful City of Light, and we want to see you!

First day of spring in Paris by *melintir

First day of spring in Paris

Join Us!

We're back in Paris!

It's been 3 years since we've visited "La Ville-Lumière," and we're excited to make our triumphant return. On Saturday, June 9th, deviants of all ages are invited to join us for a very special deviantMEET at Mécano Bar. We'll be there for much of the day, so come by at anytime!

Mécano Bar: Paris, France

  • Location: 99 rue Oberkampf, 75011 Paris

  • Date & Time:  June 9th, 2012 at 2:00 PM CEST

  • Admission: FREE!

  • What to Bring: Art supplies, ID card, and money for food/drinks!

Mecano Bar Entrance

This is the entrance to the Mécano Bar. Head to the back room for extra deviousness!

Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of ^SaTaNiA and =ZeldaDreams, who coordinate deviantMEETs in Paris monthly and have been incredibly helpful in making this happen, deviantART will be taking over much of Mécano Bar.

When you arrive, be sure to mention that you're there for the deviantMEET and you'll be given a deviantART nametag.

We'll be hanging out for much of the day, so stop by anytime after 2:00 PM to meet and mingle with deviantART staff, fellow deviants, and to simply have a great time!

The bar has free Wi-Fi, so we encourage deviants to bring laptops, iPads, sketchbooks, notepads, and cameras. This is a great opportunity to connect with old and new friends alike!  This is an all ages event.  Those choosing to drink alcoholic beverages will need to provide proper identification.

If you're not available right at 2:00 PM, feel free to drop in later in the day. The deviantART crew will be hanging out for hours. Plus, there's a strong possibility that deviant attendees will receive free deviantART goodies. ;)

Update, as of May 25th!

With our deviantMEET just two weeks away, it's getting hard to contain our excitement! We've been overwhelmed by the positive response from deviants who plan to attend and can't wait to meet, greet, and celebrate with everyone.

Because attendance will be strong, we encourage deviants to arrive anytime after 2:00 PM.  While our deviantMEET does kick-off at 2:00 PM, there's no pressure to arrive right away!  DeviantART staff will be hanging out and available for much of the day, so feel free to arrive at the time that's best for you.  This will ensure that we have a steady flow of people coming in and out of the Mecano Bar, allowing enough room for people to mingle, talk, and still have a good time.

Thank you to everyone who has told us they're attending.  We'll see you throughout the day on June 9th!

We'll see you there!

You are cool, and I am proud of you.

MAINTENANT! :giggle:

Last Saturday, Paris hosted the official deviantMEET Paris #2 as you may have seen in your message center!
What could we say except: IT WAS AWEEEEESOME!

We met so many deviants and $taff members, there were all so fabulous and awesome!
=ZeldaDreams and I arrived at the Mécano Bar around 12:00.
`anmari $namenotrequired `fritsvandersloot and `Anoya were already there!

After a quick chat, the 1st wave of $taff members arrived around 12:30 with
$Ayame-Kenoshi `mattdanna $danlev $haldron $wreckling and some more
Also some deviants were already arriving... (yeah more than 1 hour in advance  )

Then it was time to set up the bar, to unfold all stickers meanwhile deviants started to draw and chat .

01:00 PM

+spyed and $Heidi arrived in the bar  smiling as usual, and in a exceptionally devious and awesome mood !
We started to chat with them about the deviantMEET-Paris and others casual things around a drink.

02:00 PM

The :#dt team arrived directly from a small town near Lyon (500 km from Paris)
The #dt team was composed of $kouiskas $drommk $xraystyle $pachunka `KnightAR $yury-n `Nodren $allixsenos $inazar $mccann $DEVlANT `OnlyTheGoodNotes #ArtBIT and some more $staff members !

The party could now officially start!

2-3PM

The bar was already packed! 250+ deviants were there sharing their experiences and skills ! And more and more deviants kept on arriving!
Time was flying so fast. It seemed that we just welcomed the $taff and it was already 5 PM!
The devious spirit was all around the bar, everyone was laughing and sharing devious fun (#ArtBIT had been :+fav: and we didn't forget to leave a comment :D )

6-7 PM

And we still didn't took the Group shot!
+spyed asked everyone to move out of the bar to take the photo just in front of the Mécano. Thanks a lot to *Yousry-Aref-Photos for this awesome picture :thanks:
Some deviants had already left but anyway we were still a really nice and awesome group:

Hours flew by again and we were just about 10 deviants left with the $taff around 10-11pm.

11PM

+spyed had showed us some "new features" on which they are still working actually !
And the only thing we could tell you is... IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME!
The #dt guyz had worked really hard on those features and we could easily see it! (#creative and UI guyz too)

00 AM

Already 00AM and sadly the time was already up for $Heidi and +spyed They had to leave us to get some rest before going back to their activities.

This 2nd Official devMeet in Paris was just fabulous :iconflowerdanceplz: ! It lasts almost 13 hours but it was still too short to talk to everyone :(
Nevertheless, we met so many fantastic new people and were so happy to see a good part of the members of our monthly devMeets.

We sincerely hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.

And don't forget, even if you're not from Paris or from France, anytime you can pass by make sure to contact us and there will always be somebody to welcome you in our dear city of lights

To see all the pictures taken during this unforgettable day :pointr: [link] and to the official report [link]

And we would like to thanks $Ayame-Kenoshi and $Heidi without them last Saturday couldn't happened :huggle: sooo go hug them NOW ! :giggle:

Paris is the capital city of France. It is situated on the River Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region ("Region Parisienne").
Paris has an estimated population of 2,153,600 inhabitants (2005 est.). The Paris urban area has a population of 9.93 million; a vast commuter belt around the same completes the Paris "aire urbaine" (roughly: "metropolitan area") that, with its population of 11.5 million, is one of the most populated areas of its kind in Europe.

The city derives its name from that of its first known permanent inhabitants, the Gallic Parisii tribe. The city became known as Lutetia (/lutetja/) during the first to fifth century Roman occupation, but began to adopt its present-day name towards the end of this period.
Paris has many nicknames, but its most famous is 'The City of Light' (La Ville-lumière), a name it owes both to its fame as a centre of education and ideas and its early adoption of street-lighting. Paris since the early 20th century has also been known in parisian slang as Paname, a slang name that has been regaining favor with young people in recent years.
Paris' inhabitants are known in English as "Parisians" and as Parisiens in French. Parisians are often pejoratively called Parigots by those living outside the Paris Region, but this is a term sometimes considered endearing by Parisians themselves.

Today, Paris is an influential centre in politics, fashion, business, arts and science. The city serves as an important hub of intercontinental transportation and is home to some of the most prominent universities, sport events, opera companies and museums, making it an attraction for over 30 million foreign visitors per year.

Comics Are Art

Thu Jul 5, 2012, 7:50 PM by $techgnotic:icontechgnotic:

Comic-Con Journey to the Heart of The New Summer Vacation

Americans have a long summer vacation tradition of visiting the foreign capitals of the world and being sure to spend at least one day in each nation’s most iconic art museum. In Paris, we visit the Louvre. In Madrid, the Prado. In Rome, the Borghese. We feel far more comfortable in identifying the different peoples of our planet through examples of their greatest art works than we do about identifying ourselves as being represented by any one iconic “American” art museum or artist. Maybe the country is just too big for one musuem and so it has always fallen to our pop arts to carry the true visual narrative of what’s going on in the hearts and minds of the masses.

Comic-Con has become the new arts and culture go-to in domestic summer vacation destinations. It makes sense that so many are drawn to this mecca of re-connection with the roots of our first awakening into the joys and wonders of mythical and fantasy narratives. Where our organized religions and public school civics classes have stumbled, our comic books have for the last century taken up the slack in teaching us our codes of decency and chivalry and world citizenship. Now we are drawn to spend some hard-earned vacation time in enjoying what over the years has become for so many of us our guiltiest sheer pleasure, the feast of dynamic art and creative storytelling that is the All-American art form of the comic book, as well as a celebration of the movies and games and all else that has sprung from these simple works of ink on paper.

deviantART at San Diego Comic-Con International

We are hosting five panels covering the superstars of deviantART, `yuumei, *yayacosplay, Fan Art Law and "How To" on using deviantART as a publishing platform. And just like last year, deviantART is bringing the digital world to the comic convention floor in Artists' Alley.

Click here for detailed information about our various panels!

Scholarship-Winning Deviants

Of special interest to deviant ARTists spending some vacation time at Comic-Con this year will be the works of six scholarship-winning deviants that will be on display in Artists Alley and will be critiqued by leading industry professionals. The winners were chosen by comics industry veteran =DeevElliott. Also, deviantART is hosting a cosplay art show culled from over 15,000 photographic submissions. Prints will be available through silent auction, with proceeds going to the Shriners Burn Hospital.

deviantART Comic-Con on Pintrest

Take a look at the work of over 100 deviants participating in Artists' Alley on our Comic-Con Pinterest board!

In the comics world, we project the best of ourselves and our hopes and dreams for our lives and the lives of all others on the planet. Of course our fantasy narratives are missing many of the key “real-world” pieces that doom real-world efforts at achieving peace and tranquility, but our intent is pure and good. And until we figure out the really difficult real-world solutions to solving our cultural, political and environmental impasses, let us be sure to safe-keep our dreams of peace and justice, if only on the pages of our comic book art.

Questions for the Reader

  1. Is there any one artist who best defines your particular country's art for the world?

  2. Do you feel that fine artists like Pollock and Warhol tell the story of America as well as what might be understood by reading comic books?

  3. Have you been more inspired as an artist (or an arts enthusiast) by comic book artists or by fine artists (American and other)?

  4. Which art museum in the world would you most like to visit before you die?

  5. Which comic book or pop artist would you most like to meet before you die?
