Everybody, everybody ... knows about the stigma surrounding the year 2012, the "apocalypse era".
Personally, I have never believed that our world will basically just.. uproot itself in a way that it would be a complete catastrophe to the existence of our very species (like in the film).
But I do believe things that will happen before, during, and sometime after the superstitious year that will most likely make life a bit trying for us all and force us to change our ways of survival in order to adapt to the future.
I'm writing this mostly because I saw a single comment on the Yahoo article saying that the solar storm warning was just a fake (then again, he said he believed the oil spill was a hoax as well, but still), and I can't stress enough that this theory on a major solar storm has been out there for a while. This didn't just... pop up.
Solar storms have been a part of our history, the last one dating back in the 1800's or so, and the damage was very minimal (only a few burnt out power grids).
But as the Yahoo article says, our technology today is hypersensitive and will no doubt collapse under the first massive wave of supercharged energy that slams into the planet.
And I'm not talking just about our cellphones and GPSes and Internet and anything else that operates via in-space and on-earth satellites.
I'm talking about nearly everything, if not all things, that run on electricity.
We are still heavily dependent on grid power (if you don't know what that is: The power poles and powerlines you see everywhere you go, including in your yard? Those are connected to the major power grids that make up the electric companies you pay every month), and those power grids will basically explode, leaving widespread blackouts all across the nation and world.
That means: No lights, no heater/AC, not running water, no computer, no computer, no phone, etc.
Even those with generators: What do you think keeps those powered? If it's gasoline powered, what do think keeps gas pumps online?
You may all go, "Oh, I can survive without power for a few weeks."
No, when this happens, we could be without power for months, even years, depending how long it takes to create technology advanced enough to withstand the higher-leveled solar input.
The only real solution is for these companies and the government to team up and ground the power grids so as to reduce the amount of energy they take.
I don't want people to think ignorantly about this. I wish for everyone to be informed, and if you don't want to believe it, then hopefully you'll have a bit of doubt whether it will happen or not.
