Instead of scorning something that is different, we have to accept, tolerate and appreciate it and the fact that it enrichens the world with yet another thing

1. Happy Holidays and Merry New Year

As the old year begins to fade into the sunset, it is customary to reflect on the passing year and make plans for the upcoming one.  Some do this in the form of resolutions, some people make action plans, some people just swing into the new year the same way they swung out of the old one :) Whatever way you intend to welcome in 2013, I hope you're surrounded by love and that you do it safely!

I've been reflecting on the year and like many, with some focus on the unimaginable events of the last few weeks. Specifically, the shooting in Newtown.  I know that it's "human nature" to want to find answers but I find the media coverage to be brutal.  Let's be honest, we could have the attackers themselves explain the 'why' and it still wouldn't make sense.  You can't make sense of the senseless.

Regardless, I wept when I heard of these events and I believe I'm not alone. The sorrow was felt around the world and I'm sure the new year will bring on many gun debates and discussions, some of which have already started.  I'm not here to talk about gun laws and policies, I want to talk about the power of community and being better humans.

In the wake of the events, Ann Curry of NBC News wrote:

Newtown's heartbreak has a lot of us asking, "What can I do?" Thinking about this, I took to Twitter and asked people to imagine what would happen if all of us committed to 20 acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown. I added, "I'm in. If you are, RT #20Acts."
Tens of thousands of people on Twitter and Facebook not only seized the idea, they increased it to #26Acts, to include the heroic teachers, and are launching acts of kindness big and small all over America. The acts are spreading overseas, including one tweeted from Borneo.

Certainly the idea of Random Acts of Kindness and Paying it Forward are not new notions but ones we need to be reminded of.  The deviantART community is especially amazing at things like this.  From the simple acts of participating in the community to critiquing or collecting someone's artwork.  From buying someone a premium membership to donating to someone's cause.  I'm always wowed by the lengths members of the community are willing to go for, all intents and purposes, complete strangers.

Throughout the year, we upset each other, we get angry at each other and feel like we just aren't being listened to.  Whether it's members of the community, staff, volunteers or senior members - we've all found ourselves feeling like we're on the opposite side of the fence. What I have come to realize over the years is that the main motivator for how voracious these 'debates' can be, is our shared love of the deviantART community.  We may not always agree on the ways to care and nurture for it but we are all coming from a place of love and protection for something we hold dear.

That's a great realization but what do we do about it? Well there's no one answer or I'd have suggested it years ago :D but what I can tell you is what I'm going to do.  First, I totally participated in #26acts and I plan on continuing to participate in working in random acts of kindness into my days going forward.  I'm going to learn to be a better listener, I tend to multi-task and I'm not going to do that when someone is trying to talk to me.  I'm also going to practice forgiveness.  I am not infallible and let's be honest, carrying around a grudge is exhausting. I'm also going to try to be more patient - this one is going to be a challenge :D It's time to start over, rebuild and renew :) I have placed my 'resolutions' for you all to see so that you will help hold me accountable and hopefully join me

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below about how you think we can improve the 'community' in the deviantART community.  What would you like to see more of? Less of? Do you have any resolutions, if so what are they?

I wish you a safe and blessed holiday and hope you're spending it with people you love. I look forward to spending an amazing 2013 with you all.

Merry Yule

2. Daily Deviations: Listing Suggesters

As a team, we receive hundreds of Daily Deviation suggestions a day.  As a team, we endeavor to go through those in a timely manner and some of those go on to become some of the Daily Deviations you see highlighted on any given day.  When we select a DD via a suggestion, we add the name of the suggester into the selection tool.  Occasionally, the image has been suggested to us by more than one person and when that's obvious, we may choose to include both people who suggested the piece.  More often than not, this just isn't possible.  It's not possible to remember every single image we've seen and include every single person who felt it should be a Daily Deviation.  In the past, it would seem that some people on our team have chosen to edit a Daily Deviation to add a suggester, this practice just simply doesn't make sense.  We will continue to include the first suggester of the Daily Deviation and occasionally, multiple suggesters if it's possible but at the end of the day, the Daily Deviation is about the artist being featured, not about who found it.  We do everything in our power to be fair and represent the community in a positive way, however, I've recently been getting complaints that someone sent in a suggestion and someone else was listed as a suggester, and some of these comments are really unkind.  Please consider the sheer amount of feedback my team get and remind yourself that Daily Deviations are a feature of Artwork.  If you're upset because you didn't get your name in the suggester box and really need to talk to someone about it, please do not harass my volunteers.  Please note myself or email me at Moonbeam13@deviantart.com

    Thank you.

1. Gallery Clean-up Project

The Gallery Clean-up Project will focus on literally cleaning up the category tree in several ways. This first part of this project, is all behind the scenes.  Over the years there have been categories that have been "removed", merged, or changed and there are back-end changes that need to be done to fully remove them from the tree. This part will not affect you, and if everything goes properly, you won't even notice it :D

The second part of this will be ensuring that the categories are all accepting the correct file-types.  If there is a file-type that isn't being allowed in a particular category or a change you want to see happen, please contact the Community Volunteer for the gallery or suggest it to me via the Gallery Changes or Addition Requests forum.   I will be updating these as need be.

Next, I will be assessing change requests as well as requests for new additions.  Again, if you want to see changes to the tree, feel free to contact the appropriate Community Volunteer with your suggestion, or leave it on my Gallery Changes or Addition Requests forum.

Please note, that I will be posting information about upcoming changes for your feedback and discussion as your input is valuable :) Keep watching #communityrelations for more information about things to come!  Also, the Gallery Description Project mentioned further in the email ties in directly with this clean-up project as well.

2. Feedback

I'm looking for your feedback in regards to the Community Relations Newsletter.  What sort of information would you like to receive in the bi-monthly newsletter? What questions do you want answers? What topics would you like to see discussed? What suggestions do you have to make the newsletter better? Please leave your thoughts and suggestions in the comments below, or email them to me at moonbeam13@deviantart.com  Thank you!!

1. Daily Deviations

Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable.  To review, we have made the following changes:

a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.

b> Daily Deviation selectors are limited to a maximum of one selection per day.  This has been put in place to focus on quality vs quantity.

The hard-coding of these new guidelines is now in place (special thanks to $ZombieCoder for that ).

These changes are part of an ongoing initiative to better our Daily Deviation selection and ensure they are reflecting the variety and talent that exist here in the deviantART community.

What I would love to discuss next, is Daily Deviation descriptions! I have my own opinions that I wrote about here regarding them.  However, I want to know how you, the deviantART community, feels about them.

I'd like some thoughtful discussion so we can really break down if they are helpful, required, a nuisance etc.  So please think about the following questions and give me your input in the comments below:

:bulletpurple: Do you feel descriptions on daily deviations should be mandatory? If so, why?
:bulletpurple: Do you find descriptions distract from the artwork?
:bulletpurple: I believe that writing descriptions is an art form itself so if someone isn't comfortable writing something, I'd prefer they leave it black, agree or disagree?
:bulletpurple: What makes a good description for you? What are you looking for when you read them?
:bulletpurple: Any other thoughts or suggestions you have I would love to hear!

I'm really looking forward to the conversations around this :excited:

2. Bi-weekly Critique Nights

Every other week the Community Relations team is going to gather in our chatroom #communityrelations and critique artwork! Each event will focus on a different genre/medium and this week - February 22, 2011 at 3pm Eastern/12pm Pacific/8pm GMT it will be Manga/Anime.

We've started a line-up that you can access here.  Stay tuned for upcoming events!

1. Reflections

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly a year can fly by.  I've made it a practice over the years to sit back and reflect on the year, what went well, what didn't and where I'd like to see the new year go.  A year can bring a lot of lessons and without reflection it's hard to ensure that you've taken away everything important from it.  I apply this personally and to deviantART and it's that time again :squee:

A couple of fun highlights:

:bulletpink: I got to sit next to Felicia Day and help conduct our interview with her at SXSW. I'm a pretty big fan so this was very cool.  Our presence at SXSW was also a very new and interesting
experience :)

:bulletpink: The merger of the Volunteer teams into one Community Volunteers group. I appreciate that not everyone is on board with this but what it has allowed for is a bigger team and more volunteer opportunities.  The team we have now is one of the largest, most cohesive groups we've ever had and I'm honored to work with them on a daily basis.

:bulletpink: Lots of Artist Relations opportunities this year! I have spent a lot of time sourcing artists and bringing community together for a variety of opportunities.  Our artists have received more internal and external exposure due to the hard work of people like `aunnyd, $shyree2, $fourteenthstar, $Heidi  and $techgnotic.  Not to mention projects like Project Educate and the Art History project coming up :squee:

I'm also excited to be watching sta.sh writer updates and improvements unfold.  As someone who contributes content on a regular basis, sta.sh writer has been very interesting to me and I'm looking forward to the new improvements and fixes being finished and rolled out so you will love it as much as I do :excited:

I encourage your continued feedback regarding the site and its features as it helps guide us with improvements and fixes.  I also appreciate the frustration of feeling like you're not being heard.  You are being heard and this community is extremely important and it is the core of what we do.

With that I'm challenging you to reflect a little yourself on the following and leave the responses in the comments below:

A> What do you like best about deviantART?
B> What do you like least?
C> What is your highlight for the year? (deviantART related or not)
D> What feature would you like to see in the new year? (New or an improvement to something existing - list below and link examples or visuals if you want

If you aren't comfortable posting a public comment, feel free to contact me via email moonbeam13@deviantart.com or via note.  I will caution you that I get a lot of notes on a daily basis so it may take longer if you go that route but I assure you that I will respond as soon as I can.

Since this is the last Community Relations newsletter for the year, I'd like to take the time to wish you and yours a very Merry Yule (Christmas, Kwanzaa, Christmakah, Holy Night, Hannukah, or whatever you celebrate!) I also want to thank you for continuing to be the biggest and best community out there and sharing your thoughts and opinions (even the loud ones!!) on a regular basis.  YOU make this community what it is and I thank you a million times for letting me be a part of that.  The deviantART Community will always be home for me.

Blessed be!
