Complex Creations: Tales of Mythos and Magic Contest.</u>

Hello, and welcome to the first official contest held by :iconathena-stock:! I'm very excited to be holding this, ee~! :excited:
First and foremost, I'd like to introduce the other people involved in this contest: :iconlindowyn-stock: and :iconmithgariel-stock: will be my other judges for the entries, and :iconelandria:, :iconfaestock:, :iconfairiegoodmother:, :iconordinary-stock:, :iconmithgariel-stock:, :iconmithgariel:, :icondracoart-stock:, :iconlongstock:, and :icontracie76stock: will be providing the fabulous list of prizes (as well as prizes provided by me) below! If you can spread the word in any way, please do not hesitate to do so.
:bulletred::rose:But What is the Theme?</u>:rose::bulletred:
Glad you asked! :) I'm looking for someone to take an ordinary stock and make it extraordinary. How will you do that? Why, by adding a sense of the mystique to the work...combining several stocks together in a photomanipulation, digital artwork, or traditional artwork to create something magical. That's right! The theme is Mythos and Magic--meaning this contest is open to anything from Arthurian Legends to Fairy-Tales to Ancient Greece to Egypt to Celtic legends--and so forth! Contest entries will be judged on originality, effort, aesthetic aspects, conceptual thought process, and use of required stock.</b>
STOCKS YOU MUST USE!!:</u>
- One stock from :iconathena-stock:
- One stock from :iconlindowyn-stock:
- One stock from :iconmithgariel-stock:
- One stock from :iconordinary-stock:
*One stock from :icondracoart-stock:
(*please note that this artist requests NOTICEABLE stock use! The bigger the stock / more recognizable it is, the better your chances will be! :))
- :One stock from :iconfairiegoodmother:
Other rules include:
- No profanity or use of the images in a less-than-tasteful way.
- No literature entries. :[ I'm sorry. As a writer, I know that's frustrating. However, I am always welcome to other creative minds helping out in judging or perhaps writing me their stock ideas in the future...!
- No color-changes or simple manips, like adding a film grain in photoshop.
I know that's not a lot of wiggle-room, but this is what makes the contest so special! The inclusive amount of stocks can give you a lot of variety, so I look forward to seeing what you come up with. Challenge yourselves! the prizes are completely worth it. :) Just see below, since I know that's why you read so far thus far...

~Athena-Stock.:rose::
The Greek goddess Athena was the protector of wise counsel, war, art, philosophy, the defence of towns, heroic endeavour, weaving, pottery and other crafts. She became the companion and advisor to such famous heroes as Heracles, Odysseus, Jason, Perseus, Diomedes et cetera, and she fought and defeated the sea-god Poseidon over the city which would eventually became named Athens in her honor.

She sided with the Greeks in the Trojan war, and helped Diomedes to defeat her half brother Ares.

Her parents were Zeus and Metis, although Metis never gave birth to her but simply supplied with some 'genetic material' since Athena was born fully growth from the forehead of Zeus.

The Age of Discernment

Wed Aug 1, 2012, 8:13 PM by $techgnotic:icontechgnotic:

With great access comes the great responsibility of discernment.

→ This article was inspired by the conversation in the comments generated from last week’s Suggestivism article.

As we traverse the final phases of maximum raw information accumulation, potentially equipping us for jacking in to the promise of the Singularity, the contents of many lifetimes’ worth of knowledge, art, education, and history are now at our fingertips. More and more Universities, libraries and arts institutions have swung open their digital doors and granted access to their lectures, courses and curricula free of charge to anyone in the world with a connection to the web. Access to education is fundamentally shifting our society towards an unmappable future.

Here at deviantART there seems to be a new age dawning as well. deviantART has always provided an artist to artist education for new and developing artists. But more and more artists, both amateurs and professionals of all levels, are using deviantART as a real resource and platform in the creation and exhibition of their personal art gallery rather than just a place to exhibit their own works. And the arts conversation on deviantART runs across all race, religion, social classes, age, gender and education levels. Participants in this grand conversation often include the elites in their chosen medium as well as artists just creating their first sketches. The sheer amount of art categories on dA is breath-taking, the scope of beauty and imagination within each of those categories unparalleled.

But is there a danger to all information – and all art – being right at the fingertips? Will we lose sense of what is bad, good, better and best art? Will art become just one process or activity, rather than the occasional expression of the miraculous that it sometimes is? What will become of our powers of discernment in the flood of information? Rather than becoming self-satisfied about all the great art now just a click away, maybe we should start trying to decide what meaning art should have in our lives, as well as what art is meaningful for our future. Important things in how we are beginning to communicate as one worldwide community of peoples are happening just beneath the surface. Now may be the time when more, not less, thoughtfulness should be deployed in discerning which art means the most to you as an artist or art appreciator?

We seem to have come to a major societal “look before you leap” moment. Shall we just keep technologically cannonballing forward, full steam ahead to wherever our digital momentum takes us? Or is it time to pump the brakes and start a serious conversation about whether or not the fundamental shift in the technology of our society should usher in a new fundamental shift in the values of our society.

So the great question confronts us all, and with each day it becomes less hypothetical and more urgent: With the advent of universal access to all information all of the time how will we decide to personally sort or categorize content or make preferences or align to and thus create global values? Will we be able to take the new responsibility thrust into our hands and really do the right thing? Will we choose the global over the personal? Will we start making choices with an eye toward our digital information-based “footprints” - - the record of our choices - - and the unintentional fallout as they become votes and statistics affecting other choices for the unseen populace of the World Wide Web?

We now have just about all the information we’re ever going to need to make a real change in this world. The ability to discern what in that information is important and which takes priority is the new challenge of our age.

QuestionsFor the Reader

  1. Does the sheer amount of art becoming more and more available for your perusal give you a sense of excitement – or a feeling of being overwhelmed and anxious that you’ll never be able to take it all in?

  2. Do you think you personally have enough of a power of discernment to be able to separate important and meaningful from superfluous art?

  3. While being able to discern between what is “important” and what is “fun” art, is it your feeling that frivolous art meant simply for enjoyment is just as important as more substantial meaningful art?

  4. What if anything will be the personal impact on your life of the arrival of the Singularity in regard to your relationship with the arts?

Hello! :la: As my first-ever contest, Mythos and Magic</b> comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to begin a project I shall call "The Athena Files: Contests and Concepts".
Each month I will be looking to feature a few stock artists who are in need of love, as well as spotlight a particular contest unfolding in DeviantArt. If you wish to be featured or spotlighted, I would be glad to receive any notes or requests suggesting as such...

For the June issue, I will feature:

:sun::star: :iconshelldevil:, whose Animal Mania</u> Contest is still underway! :star::sun:
The information can be found here: [link].
Do you love animals? Do you like making photomanipulations? Well, you're in luck! This fine contest is a great opportunity for artists everywhere to gather and work on fine-tuning their skills. There are even wonderful categories to choose from! Wild animals, under-the-sea animals, and domesticated--not to mention some adorable children as well! Please stop by. She would love to have more participants for the final outcome!

Some Required to Inspire...:

Hunter Training Show

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 5, 2013, 9:29 AM

:new:

closed. Will be doing the judging over the next few days. Thank you all for joining!

Running until:
March 30th
Registration Ends March 30th
Event Type: Hunter
Class/Classes: In Hand Hunter
Hunter Over Fences
Huntseat
Hunter Hack
Restrictions: None.

:new: New in hand class for horses under the age of 2!

Coastal Stables is hosting a Hunter Show! For those of you who have hunters, I know how difficult it is to find an actual *hunter* type show. For those of you who have no idea what a hunter show actually is, there will be blurbs by each type of class so that you will understand. Why is it a training show? Because no one does training shows it seems anymore. Heights of fences and types of classes will be given below.

Please note that I *will* be entering(scarcity of hunter classes available), however, I will be asking a third party to judge my entries in order to be fair, and if somehow I do place, the person with the next highest score will receive my prizes.

:new: ~breyersnstuff is also hosting a hunter event. Fox hunting! Go check it out, I will be entering myself. ^^ [link]

Registration is required. Registration end date will be March 1st, almost two months away.
End date for submitting entries will be March 30th. Judging will be done as soon as I can, barring unforseen circumstances.

Entries

Classes:

Hunter O/F (Over Fences)

Hunter over fences is more about rhythm, form, elegance and style, rather then speed and turns of the jumper league. This isn't about beating the clock, it's about form and movement over fences, as you would have in foxhunting, which is what Hunterseat is based off of. Steady paces and sure strides as well as correct leads are what are required in these classes. Think dressage meets jumping, straight lines and wide turns to jumps.

Class 1: Height 2'
Open only to those horses who have not shown in jumping more than once or have not had more then one jump training image.

Class 2: Height 2'3"
Open to all

Class 3: Height 2'6
Open to all

Class 4: 3'
Open to all

Mini Prix 3'3"
Open to horses who have entered at least 2 jumping shows or have 2 jump training images.

Grand Prix 3'6"
Open to horses who have entered at least 2 jumping shows or have 2 jump training images.

Hunter Hack

Hunter hack is a flat class which focuses mainly on a calm, collected rider and horse. The point is, 'is this a horse you would take out hacking?' For younger riders and horses, this is a class which focuses on temperment and movement. Strides should be long and flowing, and the horse should be responsive to the rider's aids.

Open to riders under the age of 18, or beginning adult riders. (ridden in less than 2 shows)
Paces required: Walk, trot, canter, hand gallop

Huntseat

Another flat class, Huntseat is more reserved and disciplined then Hunter Hack. This class focuses on movement, looks, elegance and correct pacing. Turnout is very important.

Open to riders over the age of 18, or experienced young riders (ridden in 3+shows)
Paces required: Walk, trot, canter, hand gallop, halt, back up, flying lead change.

In hand Hunter

Open to all horses over the age of 3.
Paces required: walk, trot, halt.

Yearling In hand Hunter

Open to all horses under the age of 3.
Paces required: walk, trot, halt.

Point System:

5 pts compared to the rest of your gallery
2 pts compared to other entries in that class
3 pts for correct attire and look. (looking 'hunter')
3 pts for correct tack and background
Up to 2 pts for a story more than two paragraphs (5 sentences each)
Jumper classes will have up to 1-3 random points added by random.org

Can receive up to 18 points (15 for flat classes)

Titles:
Hunter Jumper Grand Champion- has the most points altogether in over fence classes only.
Hunter Jumper Reserve Champion - Second highest amount of points in over fence classes only.

Hunter Horse Champion -Has most points altogether (both over fences and flat)
Hunter Horse Reserve Champion - Has most points altogether (both over fences and flat)

:rose::star:New contest now open! :star::rose:
Theme: Animal Guides (e.g. totems)

Guide & Rules:

An animal guide or totem is an animal that represents and helps you through your daily life. In ancient times, certain cultures would send their children out on a soul-seeking adventure through the wilderness in order to locate their guide and guardian. I want you, as an artistic community, to establish that concept and bring it to life. :)

Mediums Allowed: Traditional and Digital (paintings), Photomanipulations.
Number of Entries Allowed: One per Deviant.
Stock that MUST be used:
:bulletblue: one stock from :iconathena-stock:
:bulletred: one stock from :iconfairiegoodmother:

Judges: TBA (*to be announced officially soon once some things are squared away. :) )

Also if there isn't an animal involved in the photomanip, then you have not followed protocol and will be disqualified / blacklisted. :(

Pimping and putting out this contest is GREATLY APPRECIATED!! It may even earn your gallery a spotlight feature in upcoming events. :)

Remember to credit all stock you use; preferably stock used from DeviantArt. Saying you got a stock from "sxu" and not giving a link will also disqualify you--as will not notifying the stock artists you took from. = w = I'm sure you understand.

Prize list will be updated shortly! Just keep an eye on my journal. :) You can expect prizes from :iconshelldevil: / :iconfreakystuffstock:, :iconfairiegoodmother:, :iconordinary-stock:, and :iconfaestock:, however--everything from print discounts to features and possibly even subscriptions or exclusive stock packs.
I am currently offering a three-month subscription, exclusive stock, and features both news-wide and journal-wide to winners. Only the first-place winner will, however, receive the potential subscription.

Starts: RIGHT NOW, GET CRACKIN'. :D
Ends: October 8th (one day after my birthday), 2009 at Midnight! I may extend it till Halloween, but we'll see. :)

Have fun. CX :rose:
