This was move week at my college. How this works is that if you ended up with a sucky dorm room for the first semester, they give you a chance to score a better one for the second semester. Then you have to move all your crap
sans elevator or dolly up and down some stairs, across a street or many streets, and then up and down a couple more flights of stairs.
So this morning, after about four hours of sleep, this sounded like a good idea. They also canceled classes because of the snowstorm, so, bonus. Long story short, I didn't get the room I wanted. BUT I did get a room. And I like it. Pretty much anyway.
Here are the pros and cons of my new room vs. my old room.
Old RoomPros:
No chance of a roommate moving in unexpectedly
TWO beds
ONE desk
Carpet
Sink
Pretty good sized
TWO closets
TWO cupboards
TWO dressers
Mirror
All my stuff is right there already
Cons:
Ugly as fuck
The people across the street can see in my window
NOISY
Drunk noisy people in the hallways when you're trying to sleep
Connected to the freshman dorm -_-
No elevator
Heaters are noisy and they randomly go off when your room is about 50 degrees (F)
Garbage room smells like moldy warmed-up leftovers.
Bathrooms were obviously built for children
Good luck fitting in the showers! I hope you don't have to shave or anything!
New Room:
ProsVictorian brownstone
Pretty bathrooms
Big showers!
TWO beds
TWO dressers
TWO desks
Privacy!
They don't turn the heat off randomly
Cons"We may move a roommate in with you if we need the space!"
No sink
No cupboards
Tiny ass closet
Not much storage space
You're only allowed to use half the room in case we decide to do an inspection
You have to move all your shit by yourself
No elevators or dollys to help move your shit!
Carry your fridge up four flights of stairs, sucker!
Heaters are still noisy
You have to rearrange everything
You can't turn the heat off
You find out just how much crapola you really own
Yeah, I'm wondering if this was really a good idea.
Despite that, I'm actually pretty okay with the move. My pro/con lists make me think I should have put more thought into this move, but whatevs. It's nice to have a change of scenery and there's supposed to be a lot less noise in my new dorm. We'll see how I'm doing in a week. I may not even have enough energy to unpack all my shit from the move.
I also realize that I've got a little over a boxful of textbooks that I need to sell back. Because, cash! Also I won't have to carry them out of my room when I have to move out. So, bonus.
So, when you move, where does all the stuff come from? Your room seems so empty, then you try to pack it all up and it's like, HELLO. Remember me? You're gonna have to move me now!
FML
I'ma finish unpacking nao.
