Celebrating Diversity #16

What is art?

I can assure you that the answer I've chosen for myself is probably not the answer that works for you.

Regardless of the differences our backgrounds and experiences bring to the table there are some universals that pop up across media and eras and what have you.

This time, I've chosen 16 pieces that somehow incorporate the human form.

Celebrating Diversity #1-15 found here:

"If man is to survive, he will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between men and between cultures. He will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life's exciting variety, not something to fear."
- Gene Roddenberry

Celebrating Diversity #1

Welcome to this new series of Art Features! Even tho most of you are aware of the many many galleries and categories here on dA, I think most of us move in a sort of "comfort zone" between Galleries, Channels or Groups that provide us with a constant flow of new art. And sometimes we forget all the other great artforms, styles and media that are out of our "comfort zone". And today I want to step out of that warm and cuddly place and feature some awesome works from places on dA I don't usually visit!

Since this is the first entry, I thought I should explain it a bit more, so that is why there is more text in this article ;) The topic of celebrating diversity is something that I really want to cherish. I am guilty of not fully experiencing dA myself and I want to put an end to that!

And now, to the Art!

My motivation?

We live in a world full of diversity, every day in real life and every day on dA. And it happens so often that a work of art is "slashed" simply because it is different than others. Because someone sees it and doesn't understand it and doesn't take the time to think about it.
People who react like that to art, follow the same thought process, that so many many people follow when it comes to Racism, Sexism, Homophobia: "This is different to me, therefore it must be wrong." You may wonder if that comparison may not be too harsh, but when we open they way for people to condemn what is different in the small things, like in this case Art, we open the path to that thought process taking shape in many more places.
Instead of hating on differences, we need to embrace them! Because differences make life so great! We don't want to live in a dull world where everyone thinks and does the same and everything is dull and boring and repetitive.

Do you celebrate diversity?

  • How do you feel looking at something that is different, something that is unusual to you?
  • Are you willing to open your mind and experience new things?

I have a little task for you!

:la:
Go to the deviantART.com Homepage and browse thru a gallery you never visited before and share with me/us some amazing Art that you found by doing so :eager:

And you know what? If what you find is really awesome, maybe suggest it as a DD to a Community Volunteer! :eyes:

What is art? Probably one of those questions that will remain without a definite and universal answer. However I think we all can identify art when we see it, even if we don't know to explain why.

Art has a very personal definition and there are no rights or wrongs. For me, art is to find beauty and something worth taking the time to pay close attention to, in everything that surrounds us.

Some people say everything is art. Some agree and some don't. Regardless of your position in this debate I think is safe to say that maybe not everything is art, but everything has the potential to be art, if we know where to look.

In a world as diverse as ours, there is an infinite plethora of things which are beautiful in their own way, it's just a matter of having that sensibility to see it.

For me, an artist is someone who has learned to see that something in things, no matter how small, big, pretty, ugly, old, new, common or rare they are.

Are you an artist?

"No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist."
- Oscar Wilde

Writing this article will prompt me to go on a journey into the deviantART galleries I have rarely explored. I've chosen to feature some deviations from the Film & Animation, Traditional Art and People and Portraits Photography galleries!

Most of you know me for my rather dark surreal and abstract art features, often accompanied with melancholic and depressive music. But this doesn't mean that I'm not paying attention to other genres of art here on deviantART. That is why I like the idea of "Celebrating Diversity". It's an "out of the comfort zone" feature, so to speak.

Enjoy!

Celebrating Diversity #12

This edition of Celebrating Diversity I want to focus on two extremes of art: Extremely detailed and realistic works and minimal and abstract art. Both tendencies or trends have their place and time in art and history and are appreciated by many people. Not always does one person like both, but to me personally, art has always been more about feeling, than about complexity. Something simple can touch me emotionally as well as something blasting with details. Art is just as individual as every human being!

How do you feel about these two extremes?

  • Do you prefer one over the other?
  • Do you think minimal art is easy and can be done by anybody?
  • Does talent to work with lots of details and perfection make you automatically a good artist?
Please discuss! :aww:

I hope you enjoyed the article and the series

The Day You Drowned- to Oswaldo, my first friend
I could hear the ocean that morning, some
thirty miles from the coast, in that way
the waves always break down without anyone
around to see the waves break down
and it made no sense that I would wake
to the sound of the waves breaking down that
morning, but there I was, awake, ocean
in my ears, and alone. I learned what happened
much later, bike tire treading water at our
park, a sign hung in the rain. You were
alone, skirting, dancing with the shore
the way you always would, the way you always did
until then, when the ocean danced with you
and led you onward, your favorite music with
your favorite partner leading you on, foam
stepping forward, you stepping back. When
the false step happened, the ocean cradled you
because you were its favorite partner
and it never wanted to lose you, to be left
alone. You, being gracious, went along.
The ocean was in my ears this morning. I hope
you're still dancing in the ocean's arms.

Do not assume (if I hold the door for you),
that I am making a statement
about your inabilities
to open the door for yourself.
If you hold it for me,
I'll say 'thankyou'.

Do not assume (if I pay for the meal),
that I am underestimating
your earning capacity
as a woman.
If you invite me out for a meal,
you're paying.

Do not assume (if I defend your rights),
that I am belittling
the attempts that you have made
to defend your rights yourself.
If you defend my rights,
I'll consider you human.

draping lonely limbs around an empty ink-jar heart.

A night witch scrawling her incantations on blue moons,

rolling her letters into sentences like a curse.

But, it is in these coffee eyes you have found a home.

Celebrating Diversity #20

And back on track with this project :la: I am very happy to have this article be the 20th "anniversary" of the series :D I enjoy every article as it shows so wonderfully the wide range of wonderful and amazing art you can find on dA. Every category has gems and can leave you in awe.

Remember: Never stop looking beyond your horizon ;)

Or maybe just spin around, stop randomly and enjoy whatever is there :P

I always loved and will always love the diversity you can find on dA. So so many amazing artists have found a home on this site and it is a shame that most of us, me included, don't go "out" often enough to find those talented people, who are just a gallery away from us :)

I hope you enjoy this small selection as much as I do  :peace:

Celebrating Diversity #13

Sun Dec 16, 2012, 5:59 AM
In this issue of Celebrating Diversity, I would like to remind you of an amazing feeling...when you see a piece of art created in a medium or genre that you have little or no experience of working in, and it feels like you're witnessing something magical, something beyond your comprehension.

It's wonderful to revel in the joy of How do they do that? and find inspiration in the creations of other artists. So I challenge you to take a step outside of the galleries that you regularly browse and immerse yourself in the experience of indulging in something new.
:bulletpink: Do you watch artists who use mediums that you don't use in your own art?
:bulletpink: Within mediums that you're familiar with, do you enjoy browsing genres that you don't often explore in your own work?

How does diversity in art inspire you?

:bulletpink: When you see something amazing in a medium that you've never used, does it make you want to try your hand at that medium?
:bulletpink: Do you find your own artistic style being influenced by the experience of viewing other people's work?
:bulletpink: Are your horizons broadened by learning about other mediums and genres of art?

A diversity challenge for YOU!

The next time you see something on dA that you enjoy but don't understand, whether it's a subject matter that you're unfamiliar with or a technique that you've never seen before, take some time to learn about it. Read the artist's comments, go on a Google mission to find out more, use the More Like This feature on dA to see similar work. Expand your artistic frame of reference and knowledge to fuel your creativity!
