Swerve's!

I had an idea for something I'd like to do the other day. The reality is, though, that I won't have anything like enough time to do it as I'm very busy with work and it's only for fun. So I'm wondering if any artists, specifically those who enjoy Transformers, would fancy being part of it?

The idea is to re-create the intro to Cheers using characters from the Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye comic, re-naming it Swerve's.

There are fifteen stills in the intro, some easier than others, but if we could draw one each, using Ratchet, Hound, Tailgate, poor Pipes, Fort Max, Swerve himself and many others, I'll put together the animation (simple enough) and there would be a pretty cool little showcase of our skills to go around the net. As a bonus, we might help get some new eyes on the MTMTE comic, which - as you should know - is genius and deserves to continue for many, many years.

New webcomic - Flamefoxes

'ello!

I've just popped in to let you know what my new webcomic, called 'Flamefoxes' is launching this Friday, 8th March).

It's a juvenile strip based on characters I created at the age of six, which were all rip-offs of 80s cartoon show characters. Thundercats, especially. None of the names made sense, nor did any of the heroes' or villains' motivations for their actions. It struck me that this would be prime comedy material, especially if I drew it in exactly the same style as my six-year-old self.

So, it's a collaboration 28 years in the making, between me and me. Should be fun!

Timebadger toy available for pre-order!

In a lovely twist of fate, my character Timebadger has been made available to pre-order by the fine folks at Shouldbee! [link]

Here's the deal: if 25 people pre-order the toy, it'll go into production as a 3-inch figure in either colour or plain white, for you customisers out there. This, in turn, will increase the likelihood of plushie and colorways versions, as well as further characters from Timebadger's world; primarily his sidekick Convenient Steven and his arch-nemesis Foxton J Culworthy.

You can use credit card or PayPal to secure your toy! Credit cards will not be charged until the toy is confirmed as being in production. PayPal will be charged immediately but the amount will be refunded if the toy doesn't go ahead.

Shouldbee have a damn good track record of making the toy look very, very close to the artwork (in many cases, much better than the artwork). In fact, they've made toys for Paradox Interactive (The company behind such games as Magicka, War of the Roses etc.), Ace Team (Zeno Clash) as well as Gaslamp Games (Dungeons of Dredmor) and many other partners. For the foreseeable future, I'm taking commissions in various forms!

There's a list of my standard rates on the Commissions page of my site which include Bean Men, vector portraits and sketch cards. If you fancy something a little more extravagant, however, you can get a third off Direct-A-Poster commissions (now £100, down from £150) if you quote BEST BELUGA in the subject line of the email when you order.

Spider-Man t-shirt design - HELP NEEDED!

Hi everyone,

I'm really making a tit of myself by going all over the internet trying to beg for help, but them's the brakes.

I submitted a Spider-Man t-shirt design to Threadless' recent contest but somehow only got 3 days for voting as opposed to some who had 3 weeks! So it would be a GREAT help if you could please click the link below and rate my design as a FIVE. This will give me a half-decent chance of competing for the prize, which is an official Threadless/Marvel approved Spidey tee design in mass production, plus enough cash to pay my bills (as a newly self-employed artist, believe me... it's sorely needed right now!). It requires you to sign up to Threadless, but I've been assured that this is very quick and costs you nothing.

Keeping the dream alive

Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. I left my day job in May, taking voluntary redundancy which was... shall we say, 'disappointingly small'... to pursue my lifelong dream of making a living from my art. Well, so far it's been a mixed bag. I've had some success, some letdowns and a LOT of drawing and chasing clients. I know this is par for the course, I'm not complaining. I'd much rather be doing this than my old office job.

That said, I was hardly in a strong financial position to leave my job but at the time I made the decision, there was an almost sure thing lined up which would have been very lucrative and would probably have set my career off in a new and exciting direction. Of course, it fell through and since then it's been hand-to-mouth.

So what's my point? I would LOVE it if you guys would check out my STORE/COMMISSIONS page and if anything takes your fancy, give me a shout! I am officially open for commissions full-time (well, until further notice) and if you're in a band with a Bandcamp page, you get a discount on my commercial rates too! Oh, and hey, Halloween special offer coming soon...
