The pig carcass filled most of the stainless tub where the delivery men had laid it. Freshly slaughtered, but not butchered, it had taken four of them to lift it there. None of them spoke to Rinnovi, only pausing for him to sign for the animal before they left.
On the way to the door, one of the men pointed at the stickers affixed to virtually every item in the house; black typewritten names and addresses on white shipping labels. The leader of the group nudged him and shook his head 'no', before hurrying him out the door.
Rinnovi poured a scotch, and turned on the kitchen vid display, his own visage peering back at him with a smile. He fro

WakeThe sun was falling through the sky, and Sara shivered; the atmosphere was too thin. She crouched low on her hoverboard and leaned forward, hugging the ground as she zipped past the air buoys that marked the allowed paths. The buoys bobbed in the air with the undulations of the atmospheric currents, little orbs of color set adrift in the heavens.Wake5 years ago in The Future of Holidays More Like This
It had been a while since she had needed to race the sun home, since she had seen it this low in the sky, dull and orange and more than a little hazy. It was so much more elegant when it was balanced above them--it was fuller then, more majestic. Dusk was not a beautiful time.

A droplet of water dangled from the ceiling. It clung on as dearly as it could, but being unable to talk, it couldnt call for help and, in such a large metropolis, no-one would notice it to save it from losing its grip. Swiftly, it slipped from the tattered roof and fell into the shallow pool forming underneath. Another droplet was already beginning to form on the ceiling, reflections of the surrounding metal walls being twisted through it as it swelled and, eventually, suffered the same fate as the many droplets before it.
The walls were thin and corrugated, and had devolved over the years from a swish si

There was a sudden series of whirrs as each of the 3 doors to the nursery slid open, and her charges, from tiny not-walks to the older junior-techs flew through, pulling themselves through the air with the assistance of the handles found on the walls of the colony station for just that purpose. The droid waited with seeming patience as each of her charges lowered themselves onto the cushions scattered about the room, and then closed the doors and activat

A glass ball shattered on the ground, catching the attention of the cameras in the room. They quickly scanned the area and found the culprit. A mouse had found its way to the first branches on a tree. Red eyes reflected on the broken glass illuminating its metallic body. Out of the garland-laced wall came a small claw. In one swift movement it caught the metal mouse and lifted it to a calendar display on the wall. December 24 stretched across the screen. The mouses ears perked up and it knew what to do. Once it scurried into a hole in the wall, the red glow darkened and the cameras reset to await the next da

The future of the holidaysThe light had changed over the years. Not brighter, or dimmer, but something about it suggested that it was not the same bright star that watched over those first Christmases so many years ago. Not that there was anybody around that could remember how it had been of course they were all long gone. The future of the holidays4 years ago in The Future of Holidays More Like This
The star that now hung in the sky over the crater-pitted desert was larger than any other in the night sky. It squatted behind the earth, illuminating all with its blood-red glow, and lighting a path for the missiles to follow.
Another bomb fell, fireworks to celebrate the New Year. There was nobody left to appreciate its explosive splendou
