People debate over what would happen to the soul that was kissed by a Dementor, but it's simple: The Dementor absorbed the soul into its "stomach". A Dementor's presence alone is enough to cause misery in mind, so being inside it means you will experience that misery day to day without resting, hence "worse than death". Once the Dementor dies (it's said that they can die due to starvation), the soul will be free.
