For those who may not know, the Dark Energy Crisis is the original concept for the ending of the ME trilogy before it was scrapped during development for ME3. Former ME lead writer Drew Karpyshen said that the ending and it's themes were originally foreshadowed in previous games with the most notable being the rapidly dying star at Hastrom.
The DE Crisis would eventually boil down to a choice between sacrificing humanity to stop the crisis or destroying the reapers and taking your chances.
